Effect of sewage sludge-derived amendments on the nutrient uptake by Chinese cabbage from Mediterranean soils

Marko Cerne et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of sewage sludge-derived compost and biochar amendments on Chinese cabbage's uptake of various nutrients. The results show that the amendments increase the cabbage's nutrient uptake and availability. Despite using higher amendment rates, the effects on soil and plant growth are not significant. However, further research is needed to understand the long-term effects.

Assessment of leaf photosynthetic performances and bioaccumulation of trace metals by lettuce leaves and strawberry fruits amended with sewage sludge: Which possible re-use in agriculture?

Costanza Ceccanti et al.

Summary: Sewage sludge can improve soil fertility but may pose a risk to human health due to trace metal content. This study found that moderate levels of sewage sludge amendment increased leaf photosynthesis and biomass in lettuce and strawberry plants. The accumulation of trace metals in leaves and fruits was generally below safety thresholds.

Baoling Duan et al.

Summary: Through the analysis of sludge samples from 13 wastewater treatment plants in central Shanxi Province, the study found that although the heavy metal contents were below the threshold values in China, there was still a significant potential ecological risk, mainly due to the levels of Hg and Cd exceeding the ecological risk limits, and the significant impact of coal-related industries.

Summary: The study in Northern Ireland examined the level and spatial distribution of heavy metal pollution in industrial, agricultural and urban soils through the evaluation of selected heavy metals and physiochemical parameters. Results showed high levels of heavy metals with severe pollution risk, particularly As, Cd, and Pb, indicating ecological threats. Mixed factors of anthropogenic and lithogenic sources contributed to the presence of heavy metals, as revealed by multivariate statistical analysis.

Land application of municipal sewage sludge: Human health risk assessment of heavy metals

Elif Yakamercan et al.

Summary: Land application of municipal sewage sludge has become a popular option worldwide, but the heavy metals in the sludge pose potential ecological and human health risks. This study assessed the risks of heavy metals in sewage sludge samples from different cities in Turkey, finding that children may face higher health risks compared to adults due to exposure to Pb, As, and Cr. These findings suggest that regulatory limits alone may not be enough to protect all individuals from health risks associated with municipal sewage sludge.

Distribution and environmental risk assessment of trace metals in sludge from multiple sources in Taiwan

Ming-Huang Wang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the level of heavy metal contaminants in sludge from different sources in Taiwan and analyzed the associated ecological risks. Significant differences were found in the concentrations of heavy metals in sludge from different sources. Although Taiwan has not established regulations for the reuse of sludge in agriculture, the concentrations of heavy metals in most groups were lower than normal levels, indicating unsuitability of industrial sludge for agricultural use.
