Chitosan as a potential natural compound to manage plant diseases

Roohallah Saberi Riseh et al.

Summary: Due to the awareness of pesticide dangers, the necessity for non-chemical approaches has grown. Chitosan, a biopolymer, is an effective choice in phytopathology due to its biocompatibility, biodegradability, and bioactivity. Chitosan reduces plant diseases through direct antimicrobial function and induction of plant defense responses.

Use of Chitosan and Other Natural Compounds Alone or in Different Strategies with Copper Hydroxide for Control of Grapevine Downy Mildew

Gianfranco Romanazzi et al.

Summary: In this study, the 0.5%/0.8% chitosan formulation proved to be the most effective against grapevine downy mildew (GDM), while combining it with copper hydroxide helped reduce disease incidence. Chitosan serves as a promising alternative for the control of GDM in both organic and integrated disease management systems.

Fungicide Resistance Evolution and Detection in Plant Pathogens: Plasmopara viticola as a Case Study

Federico Massi et al.

Summary: The use of single-site fungicides can lead to increased resistance selection in plant pathogens, presenting a challenge in disease control. Frequent fungicide applications in vineyards may elevate the risk of resistance development. Plasmopara viticola, the causal agent of grapevine downy mildew, has developed resistance to most fungicide classes used, posing a significant threat to grapevine production.

Three Types of Elicitors Induce Grapevine Resistance against Downy Mildew via Common and Specific Immune Responses

Aleksandra Burdziej et al.

Summary: Three recognized plant defense stimulators (PDS), methyl jasmonate (MeJA), benzothiadiazole (BTH) and phosphonates (PHOS), were shown to confer resistance to the biotrophic pathogen Plasmopara viticola when sprayed on grapevine Vitis vinifera cuttings. The effects on molecular defense-related genes and polyphenol content were observed, with specific signaling pathways for each elicitor and some cross-talks. These results provide evidence of the different modes of action of PDS in sustainable viticulture.

Chitosan induces delayed grapevine defense mechanisms and protects grapevine against Botrytis cinerea

Gicele Sbardelotto De Bona et al.

Summary: The research found that chitosan (173/17) can effectively protect grapevines against Botrytis cinerea infection and induce plant defense response. This demonstrates the potential application value of chitosan (173/17) as a natural ecofriendly product for controlling Botrytis cinerea on grapevine.

Salicylic Acid: Biosynthesis and Signaling

Yujun Peng et al.

Summary: Salicylic acid (SA) serves as a crucial plant defense hormone, playing essential roles in plant immunity against pathogens. Significant progress has been made in understanding the biosynthesis, perception, and receptor regulation of SA in recent years, but there are still key questions that need to be addressed in SA biosynthesis and signaling.

Future Climate Change Impacts on European Viticulture: A Review on Recent Scientific Advances

Fotoula Droulia et al.

Summary: Climate change poses a significant threat to the viability of grapevine, especially in Europe, where it plays a key role in both the environment and economy. Research on the potential impacts of climate change on viticulture suggests changes in phenology, composition, yield, and expansion into new cultivation areas. The findings may help in developing effective adaptation and mitigation strategies for the sustainability of European viticulture.
