Numerical simulation of downwash airflow distribution inside tree canopies of an apple orchard from a multirotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) sprayer

Hao Zhang et al.

Summary: This study developed a CFD model to predict downwash airflow inside tree canopies and validated the model through experiments. The results showed that airflow velocity inside tree canopies is influenced by multiple factors. This research provides important references for the application of UAV sprayers in orchards.

Research on Droplets Deposition Characteristics of Anti-Drift Spray Device with Multi-Airflow Synergy Based on CFD Simulation

Guiju Fan et al.

Summary: This paper presents a V-shaped anti-drift spray device with multi-airflow synergy to improve droplet deposition in the canopy of fruit trees. A droplet spatial motion model and an anti-drift mechanism based on particle dynamics analysis were constructed. The influences of spray pressure and V-shaped wind speed on droplet movement were investigated, and a simulation model of the flow field between the spray device and the fruit trees canopy was established using computational fluid mechanics (CFD). The results showed significant impact of the factors on droplet deposition characteristics, with V-shaped wind speed having the highest influence. The anti-drift experiments demonstrated the effectiveness of the device.

Cotton canopy airflow simulation and velocity attenuation model based upon 3D phenotype and stratified sub-regional porous medium

Huiyuan Cui et al.

Summary: In this study, a digital method utilizing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and machine-learning (ML) methods is proposed to predict airflow distribution in a dense crop canopy. By generating a virtual 3D cotton plant and using a stratified sub-regional porous medium model, ML algorithms are trained under different spray operating parameters to achieve accurate airflow prediction. This data-driven model can optimize operational parameters and eliminate complex CFD simulations or tedious physical experiments.

The Airflow Field Characteristics of the Unmanned Agricultural Aerial System on Oilseed Rape (Brassica napus) Canopy for Supplementary Pollination

Songchao Zhang et al.

Summary: The study conducted experiments in an oilseed rape field using an unmanned agricultural aerial system (UAAS) to investigate the effects of flight speed (FS) and flight height (FH) on airflow velocities (vx, vy, vz). The results showed significant impacts of FS and FH on airflow velocities, with confirmed pollen spread effectiveness of the UAAS airflow field, supported by high-speed dynamic camera technology and pollen samples collected during the experiments.
