Application of Sophora alopecuroides organic fertilizer changes the rhizosphere microbial community structure of melon plants and increases the fruit sugar content

Ling-qi Hua et al.

Summary: The study found that Sophora alopecuroides organic fertilizer can alter the composition and function of bacterial and fungal communities in the melon plant rhizosphere, promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria. The sweetness of the fruit is positively correlated with the abundance of beneficial microorganisms, and the organic fertilizer can increase the content of soluble solids and sugar in the fruits to achieve a sweetening effect.

Actinobacterial biofertilizer improves the yields of different plants and alters the assembly processes of rhizosphere microbial communities

Yulong Li et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the universal validity and regulatory role of a biofertilizer on rhizosphere microbial communities associated with different plants. The results showed that biofertilizer application increased the yield of different plants and affected the composition of rhizosphere fungi. Additionally, the alpha diversity indices of rhizosphere microbial communities for single plant species exhibited distinct trends in response to biofertilizer application.

Diacetoxyscirpenol, a Fusarium exometabolite, prevents efficiently the incidence of the parasitic weed Striga hermonthica

Williams Oyifioda Anteyi et al.

Summary: The study found that the Fusarium exometabolite DAS has strong herbicidal effects on S. hermonthica without affecting the growth of host crops. Incubating DAS in the soil can promote the growth of soil microbial community and degradation of DAS.

Comparative effects of two humic substances on microbial dysbiosis in the rhizosphere soil where cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) is grown

Nan Jiang et al.

Summary: This study found that humic acid can reduce the relative richness of potential phytopathogenic fungi in soil and negatively affect the aboveground biomass of cucumbers. Additionally, humic acid facilitates the growth of beneficial microbes and increases the complexity of the microbial network, leading to a decrease in the relative abundance of phytopathogenic fungi and an increase in cucumber growth.

Herbicidal secondary metabolites from Bacillus velezensis JTB8-2 against Orobanche aegyptiaca

Wei He et al.

Summary: Egyptian broomrape is a parasitic plant that causes significant losses to important crops, and effective control methods are rare. In this study, a bacteria strain called Bacillus velezensis JTB8-2 was found to have biological control functions against broomrapes. Four secondary metabolites were isolated from the strain, and two of them exhibited the strongest herbicidal activity, showing great potential for developing new herbicidal products to control Egyptian broomrape in the future.

High-throughput cultivation and identification of bacteria from the plant root microbiota

Jingying Zhang et al.

Summary: The study established a straightforward protocol for high-throughput bacterial isolation from fresh root samples, allowing for cultivation of native bacteria from roots. Using a two-sided barcode polymerase chain reaction system enabled the identification of pure and heterogeneous bacterial cultures.

Mechanisms of resistance and virulence in parasitic plant-host interactions

Markus Albert et al.

Summary: Parasitic plants pose a significant threat to plant growth and crop productivity, with some host plants evolving defense strategies to avoid infection or actively protect themselves. Current understanding of host plant defense mechanisms against parasitic plants is being reviewed, with future studies expected to contribute to the development and breeding of resistant crops.
