Construction of a core germplasm bank of upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) based on phenotype, genotype and favorable alleles

Peng Han et al.

Summary: This study constructed a core germplasm bank for cotton breeding, which consisted of 85 accessions representing 16.90% of the original germplasm resources. The core bank showed slightly decreased phenotype ranges and increased coefficients of variation compared to the original bank. It also exhibited high levels of genetic diversity, with an average polymorphism information content of 0.166 and heterozygosity of 0.232, accounting for a significant portion of the values in the original bank.

Kiwifruit MYBS1-like and GBF3 transcription factors influence l-ascorbic acid biosynthesis by activating transcription of GDP-L-galactose phosphorylase 3

Xiaoying Liu et al.

Summary: This study identifies two new transcriptional activators, AceMYBS1 and AceGBF3, that positively regulate GGP gene and increase AsA accumulation. AceMYBS1 activates AceGGP3 expression and overexpression of AceMYBS1 effectively increases AsA accumulation. AceGBF3 interacts with AceMYBS1 and together they promote AceGGP3 expression. Additionally, ABA represses AceMYBS1, leading to decreased AceGGP3 expression and AsA accumulation.

Characterizing Tetraploid Populations of Actinidia chinensis for Kiwifruit Genetic Improvement

Zhi Wang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the genetic diversity and structure of 24 A. chinensis populations and found high levels of genetic diversity in the polyploid populations. The study also revealed distinct eastern and western genetic clusters. Ecological niche modeling predicted a gradual loss of potentially suitable areas for tetraploids and increasing habitat fragmentation in the future.

Cytotype distribution and chloroplast phylogeography of the Actinidia chinensis complex

Zhi Wang et al.

Summary: Research on the widespread Actinidia chinensis complex in subtropical China revealed that the species primarily consists of diploids, tetraploids, and hexaploids, with triploids and octoploids occurring in only a few populations. Genetic diversity and structure differed significantly between the chinensis and deliciosa varieties, indicating distinct climatic niche spaces for each. Ecological niche models suggested range contractions during the Last Inter Glacial, but expansions eastward or northward during the Last Glacial Maximum.

Genetic and Flower Volatile Diversity in Natural Populations of Origanum vulgare subsp. hirtum (Link) Ietsw. in Bulgaria: Toward the Development of a Core Collection

Marina Alekseeva et al.

Summary: This study investigated the genetic and flower volatile diversity in natural populations of Origanum vulgare subsp. hirtum in Bulgaria through SSR, SRAP markers, and GC/MS analysis. The results showed low to moderate genetic differentiation among populations and identified distinct chemical profiles within the flower volatiles. A core collection strategy was proposed and compared with the PowerCore software, demonstrating the selection of representatives from different genetic and metabolic clusters. The study highlights the potential for developing core collections representing the genetic and metabolite diversity of natural populations in aromatic and medicinal plants.

Yicheng Zhong et al.

Summary: Genetic diversity and structure of 955 Akebia trifoliata germplasms were assessed using 28 SSR markers, revealing moderate polymorphism and weak genetic structure. Specific characters could completely distinguish the germplasms, and a core collection of 164 germplasms was identified with significantly different diversity parameters compared to a random core collection. These findings have implications for germplasm conservation and utilization.
