Open-path anti-pollution multi-pass cell-based TDLAS sensor for the online measurement of atmospheric H2O and CO2 fluxes

Mingsi Gu et al.

Summary: We present a tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) sensor based on an open-path and anti-pollution multi-pass cell for measuring atmospheric H2O and CO2 fluxes online. The sensor utilizes two plano-convex mirrors coated on a convex surface, which differs from traditional multi-pass cells. This design prevents direct contact between the coating layer and air, achieving an anti-pollution effect. By employing two DFB lasers operating at 1392 nm and 2004 nm, H2O and CO2 absorption lines are targeted, respectively. The sensor exhibits good consistency and accuracy when compared to a commercial instrument, indicating strong potential for flux measurements in various ecosystems.

Methane and Nitrous Oxide Fluxes with Different Land Uses in the Temperate Meadow Steppe of Inner Mongolia, China

Kaikai Fan et al.

Summary: Grazing and mowing have significant impacts on the greenhouse gas flux in semiarid grasslands. The study found that grazing and mowing increased soil temperature, reduced soil water content and soil inorganic N content, leading to enhanced CH4 uptake and inhibited N2O emissions. The contribution of the spring thaw to the annual N2O budget was small.

Mitigating Ammonia and Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Stored Pig Slurry Using Chemical Additives and Biochars

Jose L. S. Pereira et al.

Summary: This laboratory study assessed the effects of different chemical additives and biochars on the emissions of NH3, N2O, CO2, and CH4 during the short-term storage of pig slurry. The results showed that acidification and biochars reduced NH3 emissions, while neutralization had a minor impact. Chemical additives did not reduce N2O emissions, but biochars increased them. Carbon dioxide, CH4, and global warming potential emissions were not affected by the additives and biochars.

A MEMS modulator-based dual-channel mid-infrared laser heterodyne radiometer for simultaneous remote sensing of atmospheric CH4, H2O and N2O

Zhengyue Xue et al.

Summary: The performance of a MEMS modulator-based dual-channel mid-infrared laser heterodyne radiometer (MIR-LHR) was demonstrated for the first time in ground-based solar occultation mode. The use of a MEMS mirror as an alternative modulator improves the stability and compactness of the system. With the comparison of experimental and simulated spectra, the mixing ratios of methane, water vapor, and nitrous oxide were determined.

Impact of Lock-In Time Constant on Remote Monitoring of Trace Gas in the Atmospheric Column Using Laser Heterodyne Radiometer (LHR)

Fengjiao Shen et al.

Summary: The selected time constant for lock-in amplification has a crucial impact on the observed line shapes in laser heterodyne spectroscopy. In this study, the influence of time constant on spectral line shape was investigated for laser heterodyne radiometer operating in continuous tuning mode. An optimal combination of scanning time and time constant was determined to effectively reduce noise and avoid significant line shape distortion.

MEMS Modulator-Based Mid-Infrared Laser Heterodyne Radiometer for Atmospheric Remote Sensing

Zhengyue Xue et al.

Summary: This article demonstrates the performance of a mid-infrared laser heterodyne radiometer (MIR-LHR) based on a micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) mirror in ground-based solar occultation mode. A high-resolution transmission spectrum is obtained for atmospheric observation of N2O absorption near 3.93 μm. The MIR-LHR with a MEMS mirror as an alternative modulator offers smaller size, lighter weight, and lower power consumption compared to traditional mechanical choppers, making the system more stable and compact. The reported MIR-LHR shows great potential in aircraft instruments and satellite payloads.
