Fruit transcriptional profiling of the contrasting genotypes for shelf life reveals the key candidate genes and molecular pathways regulating post-harvest biology in cucumber

N. Pradeepkumara et al.

Summary: Cucumber fruits are perishable, but a natural variant with extended shelf life, DC-48, was identified and used for RNA-seq to uncover the genetic architecture and molecular mechanisms for prolonging shelf life. Key genes related to cell wall degradation, chlorophyll, and ethylene metabolism were identified, and a large number of SSRs, SNPs, and InDels were found to be instrumental in cucumber improvement. The development of a genomic resource, CsExSLDb, will serve as a platform for future research on cucumber post-harvest biology.

Impacts of Gum Arabic and Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) with Salicylic Acid on Peach Fruit (Prunus persica) Shelf Life

Mohamed A. Taher et al.

Summary: This study used an edible coating of gum arabic and polyvinylpyrrolidone mixed with salicylic acid to extend the shelf life of peaches and reduce fruit tissue breakdown. The results showed that the coating significantly inhibited the degrading enzyme activities and reduced browning symptoms in the fruits, indicating that the application of this edible coating could effectively maintain the quality of peaches.

Advances in Rootstock Breeding of Nut Trees: Objectives and Strategies

Kourosh Vahdati et al.

Summary: The production and consumption of nuts are increasing globally due to economic returns and nutrition. Grafting, an ancient horticultural practice, is used in nut crops to manipulate scion phenotype and productivity, enhancing yield and quality. Understanding rootstock-scion interactions will contribute to developing new resilient rootstocks to combat climate change, diseases, and pests in nut crops.

Long term performance of mango varieties on five polyembryonic rootstocks under subtropical conditions: effect on vigour, yield, fruit quality and nutrient acquisition

A. K. Dubey et al.

Summary: The study showed that rootstocks have significant impact on the growth, fruit yield and quality of different mango varieties, with different varieties exhibiting different growth characteristics. Some rootstocks also had varying effects on different varieties, highlighting the importance of rootstock selection based on scion requirements.
