Rotation of planting strips and reduction in nitrogen fertilizer application can reduce nitrogen loss and optimize its balance in maize-peanut intercropping

Fei Han et al.

Summary: The intercropping of maize and peanut in a rotational system with reduced nitrogen application showed positive effects on maize yield and nitrogen accumulation, while it resulted in decreased peanut yield and nitrogen fixation capacity. The intercropping system also reduced soil residual nitrogen, ammonia volatilization, nitrogen leaching, and N2O emissions. The rotation of planting strips improved land equivalent ratio and nitrogen recovery efficiency, as well as alleviated the continuous cropping barrier for peanuts.

Plant root exudates and rhizosphere bacterial communities shift with neighbor context

Tayler C. Ulbrich et al.

Summary: The presence of neighboring plants can alter the root exudates and rhizosphere community of a focal plant, and the most competitive neighbor has the largest impact. Neighbor-induced changes in root exudates and microbial spillover from larger neighbors contribute to shifts in rhizosphere assembly. These changes in exudates can have greater effects on soil nutrients than on microbial assembly. This study emphasizes the importance of considering neighborhood context in microbiome studies.
