Biological activities affect the dynamic of P in dryland soils

L. E. de-Bashan et al.

Summary: Drylands, covering almost half of Earth's land surface, have low fertility soils greatly affected by climate variability, with phosphorus-rich soil dust being a main source of global primary productivity in P-limited areas. Multiple factors, including biological soil crusts and resource islands, determine the dynamics of phosphorus availability in dryland soils, highlighting the importance of addressing gaps in research on these processes in future studies.

Phosphatase activity and acidification in lupine and maize rhizosphere depend on phosphorus availability and root properties: Coupling zymography with planar optodes

Xiaomin Ma et al.

Summary: This study investigated the phosphatase activity and pH changes in the rhizosphere in response to P availability in legumes and cereals. It was found that lupine is better adapted to P deficiency than maize by increasing phosphatase activities and rhizosphere acidification. The spatial distribution of phosphatase activities and pH along individual roots of plants were found to be dependent on the root zone, with specific patterns observed in the distribution of acid and alkaline phosphatase activities along lateral roots of lupine.

Dynamics of fractionated rhizosphere soil P and plant P uptake under maize/P-mobilizing legumes intercropping in strongly weathered soil of Tanzania

Soh Sugihara et al.

Summary: Intercropping with maize and phosphorus-mobilizing legumes in strongly weathered cropland soil of Tanzania can enhance plant phosphorus uptake and improve phosphorus fertilizer use efficiency. However, phosphorus-efficient legumes may not reduce the content of less labile phosphorus in the soil.

Sulfur application enhances secretion of organic acids by soybean roots and solubilization of phosphorus in rhizosphere

Hinako Sugiura et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of sulfur (S) application on phosphorus (P) solubilization by soybean roots and the involvement of rhizobia. The results indicated that S application can promote P solubilization by increasing the secretion of organic acids by roots, but the increase in nitrogen fixation is not involved in this promotion at least in the early vegetative growth period.

Nitrogen and Phosphorus Signaling and Transport During Legume-Rhizobium Symbiosis

Yanlin Ma et al.

Summary: Nitrogen and phosphorus are essential mineral elements for plant growth and development, particularly in the symbiotic N fixation of legumes. Plants have evolved complex signaling networks to respond to phosphates and nitrates, optimizing symbiotic N fixation. Research in model organisms has provided insight into the signaling and transport processes of N and P during symbiosis.
