Germination behaviour of Avena sterilis subsp. ludoviciana under a range of light and temperature regimes

Mohammad Ali et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the light and temperature requirements for germination and the time to germination of primary and secondary seeds of A. ludoviciana in order to effectively manage this weed under NTCA systems. The results showed that primary seeds had a higher germination rate than secondary seeds, and removing the hull significantly increased caryopsis germination. A light/dark photoperiod resulted in earlier germination compared to continuous darkness.

Seed longevity and seedling emergence behavior of wild oat (Avena fatua) and sterile oat (Avena sterilis ssp. ludoviciana) in response to burial depth in eastern Australia

Gulshan Mahajan et al.

Summary: The study on seed longevity and emergence pattern of wild oat (Avena fatua L.) and sterile oat [Avena sterilis ssp. ludoviciana (Durieu) Gillet & Magne] showed that seed decay follows an exponential pattern, with seeds of A. fatua persisting longer at 2-cm depth. Emergence of both species was higher from 2-cm and 5-cm depths, with A. ludoviciana emerging earlier than A. fatua. This highlights the importance of early weed control measures to prevent continued emergence in the field.
