Atmospheric Pollutants Affect Physical Performance: A Natural Experiment in Horse Racing Studied by Principal Component Analysis

Oscar F. Araneda et al.

Summary: This study used thoroughbred horse racing as a natural experiment to study the impact of air pollutants on animal performance. The results of principal component analysis showed that nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide had the greatest influence on racing speed, followed by particulate matter and sulfur oxides. This component was negatively correlated with racing speed, indicating that air pollutants affect animal performance.

Mild-moderate equine asthma: A scoping review of evidence supporting the consensus definition

T. Kinnison et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the current body of evidence supporting the definition of mild-moderate equine asthma (mEA) and identifies gaps, strengths, and weaknesses in this evidence. The studies reviewed were performed worldwide and highlighted the need for increased standardization of diagnostic methods and reporting.

Equine respiratory viruses, airway inflammation and performance in thoroughbred racehorses

Laurent Couetil et al.

Summary: Respiratory viruses are commonly present in healthy racehorses, but their role in the etiology of equine asthma remains unclear. Nasopharyngeal detection and load of ERBV, as well as tracheal detection and load of EHV-5, are associated with increased proportions of neutrophils in BALF.

Identification of a Ruminant Origin Group B Rotavirus Associated with Diarrhea Outbreaks in Foals

Tirth Uprety et al.

Summary: The increase in severe watery to hemorrhagic diarrhea cases in neonatal foals in Central Kentucky in 2021 was linked to a novel equine rotavirus group B (ERVB) originating from ruminants. Although diagnostic investigations failed to detect ERVA, metagenomic sequencing revealed the presence of ERVB in affected foals, with similarities to ruminant-derived group B rotaviruses. This emergence of a ruminant-like group B rotavirus in foals highlights the importance of further investigation due to its impact on neonatal foals and the equine industry.
