Molecular-based detection, genetic characterization and phylogenetic analysis of porcine circovirus 4 from Korean domestic swine farms

Van-Giap Nguyen et al.

Summary: The novel and unclassified porcine circovirus 4 (PCV4) was first reported in China in 2019 and has been found to be actively circulating in pigs in both China and Korea. The Korean PCV4 strain shares high genetic similarity with other known PCV4 strains. The study also identified key genomic features and predicted essential replication elements for circoviruses in PCV4 strains, contributing to a better understanding of the genetic relationships between PCV4 and other CRESS DNA viruses.

First complete genomic sequence analysis of porcine circovirus type 4 (PCV4) in wild boars

Huansheng Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the epidemiology and genetic diversity of Porcine circovirus type 4 (PCV4) in wild boars in Jiangxi province, China. The study found that some wild boars were positive for PCV4, and the PCV4 strains derived from wild boars were similar to those found in domestic pigs but distinct from other circoviruses. These findings expand our understanding of PCVs in wild boars and provide insights into the molecular epidemiology of PCV4.

Cross-species transmission of an emerging porcine circovirus (PCV4): First molecular detection and retrospective investigation in dairy cows

Tong Xu et al.

Summary: This study is the first to report the detection of PCV4 in dairy cows and conducted a long-term retrospective investigation in Henan Province of China. The results demonstrate that PCV4 has been circulating in dairy cows for at least 10 years, and the PCV4 strains show high nucleotide homology. This has significant implications for understanding the genetic diversity and cross-species transmission of PCV4.

Molecular detection and phylogenetic analysis ofPorcine circovirus4 in Henan and Shanxi Provinces of China

Run-Bo Tian et al.

Summary: A new circovirus, PCV4, was identified in pigs with severe clinical disease in Hunan Province, China in 2019. The virus was detected in samples from pigs with different clinical presentations and showed genetic diversity. The study's results provide new insights into the molecular epidemiology of PCV4.

Development and application of a quadruplex real-time PCR assay for differential detection of porcine circoviruses (PCV1 to PCV4) in Jiangsu province of China from 2016 to 2020

Nanhua Chen et al.

Summary: There are four species of porcine circoviruses (PCVs) and a quadruplex real-time PCR assay has been developed in this study to differentiate PCV1-4 with satisfactory results. The assay showed 100% agreement with conventional PCR assays when applied to clinical samples from Jiangsu province in China, confirming the coexistence of all species of PCV1-4 strains in recent years.

Detection and genetic characterization of porcine circovirus 4 (PCV4) in Guangxi, China

Wenchao Sun et al.

Summary: The study investigated the prevalence and genome diversity of PCV4 in pigs from Guangxi Province, China, between 2015 and 2019. Results showed that PCV4 shared nucleotide similarity with other representative circovirus genomes and was most closely related to bat-associated circovirus and mink circovirus. This study provides insight into the molecular epidemiology of PCV4 in Guangxi Province, China.

Retrospective surveillance of porcine circovirus 4 in pigs in Inner Mongolia, China, from 2016 to 2018

Zhuo Ha et al.

Summary: The study in Inner Mongolia, China, revealed the presence of PCV4 infection in pig farms from 2016 to 2018, with an increasing infection rate over the years. Interestingly, PCV4 infections were not associated with PCV2 or PCV3 infections. Sequencing of three PCV4 strains showed high genetic stability with less than 80% sequence identity to other circoviruses. Phylogenetic analysis confirmed that PCV4 strains formed a distinct branch.

Comparative immunopathogenesis and biology of recently discovered porcine circoviruses

A. G. M. Rakibuzzaman et al.

Summary: Porcine circoviruses are important pathogens of production swine, including non-pathogenic PCV1 and pathogenic PCV2, PCV3, and PCV4. These viruses cause chronic, systemic infections with various clinical manifestations, with dysregulation of the immune system homeostasis playing a key role in pathogenesis.

The seroprevalence of the newly identified porcine circovirus type 4 in China investigated by an enzymed-linked immunosorbent assay

Meng Ge et al.

Summary: PCV4 is the fourth porcine circovirus identified in China and can be detected in both diseased and healthy pigs. An indirect anti-PCV4 IgG ELISA based on Rep protein was developed and used to investigate the seroprevalence of PCV4 in pig herds in China, revealing an overall seroprevalence of 43.97%, with the highest rates detected in sows.
