Dietary expansion facilitates the persistence of a large frugivore in fragmented tropical forests

Summary: The study found that the white-lipped peccaries mainly fed on forest resources (C-3 resources), with some individuals in fragmented forests also incorporating C-4 resources. Populations in fragmented forests had isotopic niches 3- to 3.6-fold the size of those in continuous forests, due to the consumption of food items with higher delta N-15 values and C-4 crops. Differences among populations were larger in fragmented forests, suggesting variable site-specific strategies to cope with habitat loss.

Size-related seed use by rodents on early recruitment of Quercus serrata in a subtropical island forest

Summary: This study found a significant size-related seed choice by rodents at the seed germination stage and showed that seeds would experience conflicting selective pressures across life stages in the early recruitment. Size-dependent seed use by rodents is a key biotic factor to limit the oak early recruitment.

Large mammalian herbivores modulate plant growth form diversity in a tropical rainforest

Summary: This study investigates the impact of large mammalian herbivores on the dominance, diversity, and coexistence of major plant growth forms in tropical rainforests. The results show that defaunation leads to a decrease in growth form diversity, an increase in the abundance of palms and trees, and changes in the relationships between growth forms. Large herbivores promote diversity among growth forms, preventing the dominance of trees and palms, while maintaining species diversity within growth forms.

Summary: The study demonstrates that large monocultural plantations, such as corn and sugarcane, provide primary resource subsidies to invasive wild pigs in Brazil. Analysis of stomach contents and carbon stable isotopes show that these plantations account for majority of the diet and facilitate population growth of the invasive species. Extensive agriculture in Brazil may accelerate the expansion of invasive wild pigs, leading to economic losses and ecological impacts.
