Convergent consequences of parthenogenesis on stick insect genomes

Kamil S. Jaron et al.

Summary: This study investigated the genome evolution of parthenogenetic species in the stick insect genus Timema and found that parthenogenesis leads to a significant reduction in heterozygosity and often results in genetically uniform populations. Additionally, the study revealed that parthenogenetic species experience less effective positive selection, indicating that sex is prevalent in natural populations due to its facilitation of rapid adaptation. The study also observed no increased accumulation of transposable elements in parthenogenetic species, likely due to the low TE activity in the genus. Overall, these findings provide empirical support for the negative consequences of parthenogenesis as predicted by theory.

Allopatric sibling species pair Drosophila nasuta nasuta and Drosophila nasuta albomicans exhibit expression divergence in ovarian transcriptomes

Koushik Ponnanna et al.

Summary: The transcriptome analysis of Drosophila nasuta nasuta and Drosophila nasuta albomicans revealed 8% differential expression in ovaries, with 9% related to female reproduction. Most differentially expressed genes were enriched in genetic information processing pathways, biosynthesis, and metabolism-related pathways. D. n. albomicans had twice as many SNPs in its transcriptome compared to D. n. nasuta, with only 5% being fixed, indicating strong purifying selection on these lineages.

Genomic Features of Parthenogenetic Animals

Kamil S. Jaron et al.

Summary: Systematic characterization of genomic features in 26 parthenogenetic animals revealed no consistent patterns across transitions to asexuality, indicating lineage-specific rather than general consequences of parthenogenesis. Only parthenogens of hybrid origin showed high heterozygosity levels, while non-hybrid parthenogens appeared largely homozygous, regardless of the cellular mechanism underlying parthenogenesis.

Few Fixed Variants between Trophic Specialist Pupfish Species Reveal Candidate Cis-Regulatory Alleles Underlying Rapid Craniofacial Divergence

Joseph A. McGirr et al.

Summary: Studying rapidly evolving craniofacial phenotypes in Cyprinodon pupfishes can help identify genetic variation influencing complex traits, leading to the discovery of novel candidate genes for human craniofacial phenotypes. The research found few fixed alleles between species, with most expression divergence explained by trans-regulatory mechanisms and evidence for cis-regulatory alleles affecting expression divergence of genes with potential effects on skeletal development.

Genomic Evidence for Convergent Molecular Adaptation in Electric Fishes

Ying Wang et al.

Summary: Fish have independently evolved electrical organs six times, with genes related to cell membrane structure, ion channels, and transmembrane transporter activity showing accelerated evolution. Convergent amino acid substitutions were observed in electric fish lineages, particularly in genes associated with electrical and muscular activities.

A single QTL with large effect is associated with female functional virginity in an asexual parasitoid wasp

Wen-Juan Ma et al.

Summary: During the transition from sexual to asexual reproduction, female functional virginity, a trait where asexual females resist mating or fertilizing eggs, appears to evolve early in the transition. The genetic basis of this trait appears to be controlled by a single recessive locus. QTL mapping and candidate gene analyses revealed a single QTL of large effect, comprising at least 131 protein-coding genes, in the related sexual species. This suggests that rapid evolution of female functional virginity in the transition to asexuality may be governed by a single locus or cluster of closely linked loci.

Transitions to asexuality and evolution of gene expression in Artemia brine shrimp

Ann Kathrin Huylmans et al.

Summary: The study found that only a few genes are consistently associated with asexual evolution, suggesting that extensive restructuring of the meiotic machinery may not be necessary. Sex-biased genes in Eurasian Artemia have high rates of expression divergence, but do not show unusual evolutionary patterns after the loss of sexuality.

BASE: A novel workflow to integrate nonubiquitous genes in comparative genomics analyses for selection

Giobbe Forni et al.

Summary: Understanding the selective forces acting on orthologous genes across different lineages is crucial for understanding their evolutionary processes. Modern sequencing technologies have made it possible to retrieve thousands of orthologous genes, but tools designed to explore selection regimes are often limited to processing ubiquitous genes.
