Quantitative characterization and genetic diversity associated with N-cycle pathways in urban rivers with different remediation techniques

Rui Weng et al.

Summary: This research quantitatively differentiated the contributions of denitrification, anammox, and DNRA in nitrate reduction processes under different remediation conditions using microbial analysis and nitrogen isotope-tracing. The results showed varied N-removal contributions in urban rivers, where the injection of Ca(NO3)2 had significant effects on microbial communities and denitrification functional genes. In addition, the dominance of Thiobacillus in N transformation processes emphasized the importance of coupling N transformation with other elements like sulfur for better understanding and manipulation of N cycling in urban rivers.

Bio-polysaccharide composites mediated degradation of polyaromatic hydrocarbons in a sandy soil using free and immobilized consortium of Kocuria rosea and Aspergillus sydowii

Ashish Khandelwal et al.

Summary: This study investigated the degradation potential of Kocuria rosea and Aspergillus sydowii, both in free and immobilized form, for polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The results showed that the addition of these microbes significantly enhanced the degradation of PAHs, with the guar gum-nanobentonite-based composite formulation exhibiting the best efficacy. Furthermore, the addition of the microbial consortium also increased specific bacterial populations and regulated the nitrogen cycle in PAH-fortified soil.

Highly enhanced removal of nutrients and benzo[a]pyrene in a siphon constructed wetland with magnetite: Performance and mechanisms

Jiaxing Lu et al.

Summary: The study found that applying a siphon in a constructed wetland can improve the removal efficiency of ammonia nitrogen and total phosphorus, promoting nitrogen cycling and nitrification/denitrification reactions. The environment created by the siphon favors the removal of benzo[a]pyrene and enhances the growth of benzo[a]pyrene-degrading bacteria.

Coupling of desorption of phenanthrene from marine sediments and biodegradation of the sediment washing solution in a novel biochar immobilized-cell reactor

Francesco Bianco et al.

Summary: This study proposes a method for removing phenanthrene from marine sediments using Tween80 as an extracting agent and treating the resulting spent solution in a biochar immobilized-cell bioreactor. The SW process effectively removes phenanthrene, and the subsequent biochemical treatment achieves a high degradation rate.

Effect of terminal electron acceptors on the anaerobic biodegradation of PAHs in marine sediments

Jun Mu et al.

Summary: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in marine sediment pose a significant threat to biological security. The addition of terminal electron acceptor (TEA) has been found to be an effective strategy to enhance bioremediation. This study demonstrated that the utilization of HCO3- and SO42- as TEAs significantly enhanced the biodegradation of PAHs compared to NO3-.

Low temperature-produced and VFA-coated biochar enhances phenanthrene adsorption and mitigates toxicity in marine sediments

Francesco Bianco et al.

Summary: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a common pollutant in marine environments, with negative impacts on ecological systems and human health. This study investigated the use of a modified willow-derived biochar to enhance its structure and prevent the desorption of phenanthrene (PHE). The results showed that the modified biochar effectively removed PHE from solution. Application of the biochar to PHE-polluted marine sediments also reduced the bioavailability and toxicity of PHE.

Anammox bacteria enrich naturally in suspended sludge system during partial nitrification of domestic sewage and contribute to nitrogen removal

Qingteng Gong et al.

Summary: The successful enrichment of anammox bacteria was achieved by maintaining low dissolved oxygen levels and long-term partial nitrification, leading to improved nitrogen removal efficiency. The activities of anammox and denitrification were determined through (NO2-)-N-15 N isotope labeling test, showing the contribution of anammox to nitrogen removal and the importance of low dissolved oxygen levels in the process.

Recent developments of the mainstream anammox processes: Challenges and opportunities

Hoang Phuc Trinh et al.

Summary: Mainstream anammox processes face challenges such as difficulty in out-selection of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria, high organic carbon to nitrogen ratio, retention of anammox bacteria, and influence of high concentrations of ammonia and nitrite compounds. Efficient strategies are necessary to manage high carbon to nitrogen ratios, improve performance in low-intensity wastewater, and retain anammox bacteria for widespread application in full-scale WWTPs. Key elements in the design, operation, and maintenance of mainstream anammox processes in full-scale WWTPs are also suggested.
