A review on fluorescence spectroscopic analysis of water and wastewater

Muhammad Farooq Saleem Khan et al.

Summary: Fluorescence spectroscopy has been widely recognized and used in water environment studies due to its sensitiveness, simplicity, and efficiency. The analysis techniques of fluorescence measurement, such as fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEMs) and synchronous fluorescence spectra, have been widely employed. It has been found that fluorescence spectroscopy can effectively characterize and assess the quality of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in water. The technique of parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) with EEMs has been used to identify DOM components.

Simultaneous determination of nitrate, chemical oxygen demand and turbidity in water based on UV-Vis absorption spectrometry combined with interval analysis

Xiaowei Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, a new method combining UV-Vis absorption spectrometry and interval analysis was developed for simultaneous determination of nitrate, COD and turbidity in water. The results demonstrated that this method could accurately detect the concentrations of nitrate, COD and turbidity with high correlation coefficients and low root mean square errors.

Improving the quantification of sediment source contributions using different mathematical models and spectral preprocessing techniques for individual or combined spectra of ultraviolet-visible, near- and middle-infrared spectroscopy

Tales Tiecher et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the accuracy of PLSR and SVM in estimating sediment source contributions, the impact of different spectral preprocessing techniques, and the influence of UV-Vis, NIR, and MIR regions on the results. The combination of UV-Vis, NIR, MIR bands with spectral preprocessing techniques showed significant improvements in model accuracy, highlighting the potential of spectroscopy as an alternative to conventional geochemical approaches in discerning sediment sources in agricultural catchments in subtropical regions.

Optical Path Optimal Length for Ultraviolet Ammonia Detection With a Compact and Flexible Gas-Absorption Cell

Yang Li et al.

Summary: A gas detection system based on ultraviolet differential optical absorption spectroscopy was developed with a flexible and detachable gas-absorption cell, achieving an optimal optical path length of 1.6 m for improved stability and accuracy. Results showed that the system provided accurate detection of ammonia at different concentrations, with a response time of 120 s at 7.5% relative humidity. This method can be used for high precision detection of other gases.

Investigation of pharmaceuticals in a conventional wastewater treatment plant: Removal efficiency, seasonal variation and impact of a nearby hospital

Lubertus Bijlsma et al.

Summary: The study investigated the occurrence and behavior of pharmaceuticals in a wastewater treatment plant receiving wastewater from an urban area and a nearby hospital. The findings showed significantly higher concentrations of pharmaceuticals in hospital discharge samples, with antibiotics having the highest concentrations during winter.
