Influence of carbon-containing and mineral sorbents on the toxicity of soil contaminated with benzo[a]pyrene during phytotesting

Svetlana Sushkova et al.

Summary: The study focused on phytotesting investigations of different sorbents for BaP remediation in contaminated soil, showing that biochar and GAC were more effective in reducing soil toxicity class compared to mineral sorbents. The optimal sorbent doses for BaP-contaminated soil were found to be 1% for carbonaceous sorbents and 1.5% for mineral sorbents, with the need to increase sorbent doses with higher BaP contamination levels. BaP tended to migrate from soil to roots and into the vegetative part of barley.

Sorption of benzo[a]pyrene by Chernozem and carbonaceous sorbents: comparison of kinetics and interaction mechanisms

Tatiana Minkina et al.

Summary: Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) is a highly persistent and toxic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon that is a widespread environmental pollutant. Research comparing the adsorption capacity of Haplic Chernozem, granular activated carbon, and biochar in relation to BaP from water solution shows that carbonaceous adsorbents have significantly higher sorption capacity compared to soil, with the Freundlich model being more suitable to describe the adsorption isotherms for BaP. Additionally, the sorption kinetic of BaP by Chernozem involves two steps, with a faster adsorption on the available surface and pores of the carbonaceous sorbents followed by a slower process of penetration and redistribution of BaP.

Summary: The study investigated the toxic effects of BaP on spring barley by conducting a model vegetation experiment. It was found that an increase in BaP concentration resulted in inhibition of plant growth processes and caused damages at the cellular level in plant tissues. The roots were most significantly affected by BaP, showing histological and cytological changes, while leaves only exhibited cytological changes.

Summary: The study found that soil contamination with PTEs near Novocherkassk Power Plant is influenced by local atmospheric circulation, with the most pronounced pollution occurring within a 3 km radius to the west of the plant. This pollution exceeds regional background and sanitary standards, posing potential health risks to nearby residents.
