Transformation of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) into a versatile and efficient adsorbent of Cu(II) cations and Cr(VI) anions through hydrothermal treatment and sulfonation

Xianbao Xu et al.

Summary: The study synthesized a versatile adsorbent, HS-PVC, from PVC waste through two-stage hydrothermal treatment and sulfonation, showing high removal efficiency for Cu(II) and Cr(VI). The adsorption capacity of HS-PVC was strongly determined by the intensities of hydrothermal treatment and sulfonation. Competitive adsorption between Cu(II) and Cr(VI) onto HS-PVC was demonstrated, with different mechanism for their removal.

Hydrothermal liquefaction of algal feedstocks: The effect of biomass characteristics and extraction solvents

Sachitra Kumar Ratha et al.

Summary: Hydrothermal liquefaction of algal biomass is a promising technology for the production of liquid biofuels in the renewable energy sector. Recent research has focused on the effect of feedstock composition and solvents on biocrude quality and yield. Challenges associated with high N/C and O/C ratios in proteinaceous biomass-derived biocrude need to be addressed. Co-liquefaction of carbonaceous biomass and the use of solvents as reaction medium and extraction agent have shown promise in improving biocrude formation. This paper extensively reviews the effect of feedstock composition and solvents on HTL biocrude formation and discusses future perspectives and challenges.

Effective depolymerization of polyethylene plastic wastes under hydrothermal and solvothermal liquefaction conditions

Yixin Liu et al.

Summary: The thermal liquefaction of PE cable plastic waste was evaluated in this study. The solvothermal liquefaction method was found to be effective in depolymerizing PE and producing high-energy oil products. The solvent played a role in dissolving and dispersing the feedstock, reducing the thermal cracking temperature in the depolymerization reaction.

SolvX: Solvothermal conversion of mixed waste plastics in supercritical toluene in presence of Pd/C catalyst

Soudeh Banivaheb et al.

Summary: Plastic pollution has become one of the most important environmental challenges, and catalytic solvothermal conversion (SolvX) offers a potential solution by utilizing mixed waste plastics for sustainable fuel and chemical production. This study investigated the effects of reaction time, catalyst loading, and hydrogen loading on the conversion of mixed waste plastics. The results showed that the addition of catalyst and hydrogen had positive effects on the conversion efficiency.

Effective depolymerization of polyethylene plastic wastes under hydrothermal and solvothermal liquefaction conditions

Yixin Liu et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the thermal liquefaction of PE cable plastic waste in a stainless-steel batch reactor, achieving high conversion rate, oil yield, and higher heating values through the solvothermal liquefaction method. The solvent plays a key role in enhancing mass and thermal energy transfer by solvating and dispersing the feedstock, reducing the thermal cracking temperature and facilitating the depolymerization reaction. This work demonstrates the feasibility of an effective technique for chemical upcycling of polyethylene-based plastics.

Numerical study of H-2, CH4, CO, O-2 and CO2 diffusion in water near the critical point with molecular dynamics simulation

Xiao Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the diffusion coefficient of H-2, CH4, CO, O-2 and CO2 in water near the critical point using Molecular Dynamics simulation, discussing the main factors that determine the diffusion coefficient. An empirical equation is developed to successfully predict diffusion coefficient near the critical point with a low average absolute relative deviation. The equation shows the best accuracy and simplicity for extension and modification, outperforming other existing equations.

An overview of recent development in bio-oil upgrading and separation techniques

Narayan Lal Panwar et al.

Summary: Bio-oil, a renewable fuel produced from waste, helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but its limitations such as high water content, viscosity, low pH, and instability hinder its application as fuel. Various upgrading and separation techniques have been developed to improve the quality of bio-oil and the environmental impact of its use is a topic of discussion as well.
