Current Status and Challenges of Analytical Methods for Evaluation of Size and Surface Modification of Nanoparticle-Based Drug Formulations

Yuki Takechi-Haraya et al.

Summary: This review discusses the challenges and current status of analytical methods for evaluating the size and surface modifications of nanoparticle-based pharmaceutical products, such as liposomal drugs and new SARS-CoV-2 vaccines. The difficulties include measuring a wide range of solid-state nanoparticles, evaluating the sizes of polydisperse nanoparticles, and measuring non-spherical nanoparticles. Although some methods have been established for analyzing the surface modifications of nanoparticles, their applicability to nanoparticle-based products is unclear. The review also highlights the need for standardization in the size and surface measurements of nanoparticles, including the lack of available reference materials and the difficulty in selecting appropriate ones for modified nanoparticle surfaces. Future research and development in nanomedicine should focus on the practice and standardization of measurement methods to design surface modifications and ensure nanoparticle quality.

Photoprotective Effects of Cannabidiol against Ultraviolet-B-Induced DNA Damage and Autophagy in Human Keratinocyte Cells and Mouse Skin Tissue

Yanmei Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the photoprotective effects of CBD against UVB-induced skin damage. The results showed that CBD alleviated cytotoxicity, apoptosis, and cell cycle arrest caused by UVB. CBD also decreased the production of reactive oxygen species and modulated the expression of antioxidant-related proteins. Additionally, CBD mitigated UVB-induced cytotoxicity by activating autophagy. The study also demonstrated that a cream containing 5% CBD was effective in reducing photodamage in a murine model.

Nadine Monika Francke et al.

Summary: The study investigated the general processability of CBD in colloidal lipid carriers, finding that high drug loads could be achieved in various types of emulsions. CBD loading increased particle size and the density of the lipid matrix, with CBD being associated with the lipid core and droplet interface. CBD destabilized the emulsions, with phospholipid-stabilized emulsions showing better stability than poloxamer-stabilized ones. Pure CBD emulsions could be produced due to CBD's supercooling tendency.
