The Pseudomonas aeruginosa homeostasis enzyme AlgL clears the periplasmic space of accumulated alginate during polymer biosynthesis

Andreea A. Gheorghita et al.

Summary: This study investigates the structure and function of AlgL, an alginate lyase in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Key active site residues, R249 and Y256, are identified. The results show that AlgL is necessary for clearing accumulated polymers and maintaining membrane integrity during alginate production. The AlgU/T sigma factor can compensate for an algL deletion. Overall, this study clarifies the role of AlgL in alginate biosynthesis.

Contribution of Pseudomonas aeruginosa Exopolysaccharides Pel and Psl to Wound Infections

Derek Fleming et al.

Summary: The absence of the exopolysaccharides Pel and Psl in Pseudomonas aeruginosa did not significantly affect the severity or wound closure rates of wound infections in a mouse model. However, the size and distribution of biofilm aggregates in the wound tissue were different, and the mutants' ability to survive antibiotic treatment was impaired.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa aggregates in cystic fibrosis sputum produce exopolysaccharides that likely impede current therapies

Laura K. Jennings et al.

Summary: In cystic fibrosis airways, Pseudomonas aeruginosa forms biofilms that are thought to contribute to chronic infection. Exopolysaccharides Pel and Psi are expressed in CF airways and play a role in the aggregation mechanism, potentially impacting therapies by increasing antimicrobial tolerance and protecting extracellular DNA from digestion.
