In silico and in vivo studies of the effect of surface curvature on the osteoconduction of porous scaffolds

Yun Zhang et al.

Summary: Recent evidence suggests that the curvature of porous scaffolds plays a crucial role in tissue regeneration by affecting growth factor distribution and osteoblast migration. Mathematical model predictions were validated through in vivo assessments, showing that newly formed bone appeared first near the vertices of the major axes in elliptical channels. This suggests that curvature-guided osteoconduction may be a key factor in enhancing bone ingrowth for scaffold implants.

Porous tantalum structure integrated on Ti6Al4V base by Laser Powder Bed Fusion for enhanced bony-ingrowth implants: In vitro and in vivo validation

Pengfei Lei et al.

Summary: In this study, novel high-interface-strength Ti6Al4V-based porous Ta scaffolds were successfully manufactured for the first time using Laser Powder Bed Fusion. Mechanical testing and in vitro biocompatibility assay demonstrated that the novel scaffolds possessed good mechanical compatibility and biocompatibility. Animal experiments showed that the scaffolds were well integrated with the host bone, indicating good osteointegration performance.

3D porous Ti6Al4V-beta-tricalcium phosphate scaffolds directly fabricated by additive manufacturing

J. Li et al.

Summary: In this study, 3D porous hybrid scaffolds made of a titanium alloy and beta-tricalcium phosphate ceramic were successfully developed using 3D fiber deposition technique. The addition of TCP improved the bioactivity of the metal alloy, and the resulting scaffolds may lead to more effective strategies for controlling the implant-bone interface in orthopaedics and craniomaxillofacial surgery, showing promising long-term clinical results.
