Retinoblastoma and uveal melanoma in Jordan: incidence, demographics, and survival (2011-2020)

Yacoub A. Yousef et al.

Summary: Retinoblastoma (RB) is more common and has better survival in Jordan than uveal melanoma (UM). RB in Jordan is similar to Western countries in terms of incidence, globe salvage, and survival. UM is less common in Jordan, with a lower age at diagnosis associated with better survival compared to Western countries.

A Proposal for Future Modifications on Clinical TNM Staging System of Retinoblastoma Based on the American Joint Committee on Cancer Staging Manual, 7th and 8th Editions

Yacoub A. Yousef et al.

Summary: This study assessed the comparative prognostic values of the 7th and 8th editions of the AJCC clinical staging manual for retinoblastoma (RB) and suggested modifications for future editions. The proposed modifications provided better prognostic value for eye globe salvage and resolved discrepancies in previously published classification systems for RB.

Metastatic Death Based on Presenting Features and Treatment for Advanced Intraocular Retinoblastoma A Multicenter Registry-Based Study

Ankit Singh Tomar et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the presenting features, tumor size, and treatment methods for the risk of metastatic death in advanced intraocular retinoblastoma (RB). The results showed that tumor size and treatment methods can effectively predict the survival rates and risk of metastatic death in patients.

Incidence of retinoblastoma in children and adolescents in Brazil: A population-based study

Annamaria Ciminelli Barbosa et al.

Summary: This study aimed to estimate the incidence of retinoblastoma in children and adolescents in Brazil based on population-based cancer registry data. The study found that the incidence rates of retinoblastoma in Brazil were lower than those reported in other countries worldwide, except in the Northeast region. The study also highlighted the need for more precise estimates to better plan ophthalmologic care for retinoblastoma in the country.

How Telemedicine and Centralized Care Changed the Natural History of Retinoblastoma in a Developing Country Analysis of 478 Patients

Yacoub A. Yousef et al.

Summary: The implementation of a telemedicine-based twinning program at King Hussein Cancer Centre significantly reduced the mortality rate and increased the overall eye salvage rate for retinoblastoma patients. The survival and eye-salvage rates remained comparable at both early and later stages of the twinning program implementation.

The Predictive Value of the Eighth Edition of the Clinical TNM Staging System for the Likelihood of Eye Salvage for Intraocular Retinoblastoma by Systemic Chemotherapy and Focal Therapy

Yacoub A. Yousef et al.

Summary: The eighth edition AJCC/UICC cTNM staging and the International Intraocular Retinoblastoma Classification systems are both effective in predicting eye salvage rates for retinoblastoma by CRD. Eyes with higher cT stages are more likely to experience treatment failure.

Said El Hage et al.

Summary: The study aimed to assess the incidence of retinoblastoma in the Lebanese population aged between 0 and 19 years, revealing a relatively low age-standardized rate for retinoblastoma, which could be underestimated due to underdiagnosis in the refugee population. Efforts are being made to overcome financial barriers in the treatment of retinoblastoma by collaborating with neighboring Arab countries.

Late presentation and suboptimal treatment of breast cancer among Syrian refugees: a retrospective study

Hikmat Abdel-Razeq et al.

Summary: Syrian refugees with breast cancer tend to present late, have more advanced-stage disease, and are more likely to receive delayed and suboptimal therapy, leading to worse outcomes. An international systematic approach for cancer care among such vulnerable populations is urgently needed.
