The crosstalk between reactive oxygen species and noncoding RNAs: from cancer code to drug role

Jing Zuo et al.

Summary: Oxidative stress, characterized by the excessive accumulation of reactive oxygen species, is an emerging hallmark of cancer. Noncoding RNAs have been found to be closely associated with redox homeostasis and have the potential to be effective targets for cancer therapy. Additionally, the detection of ncRNAs in fluid samples provides a novel method for cancer diagnosis.

A genome-scale screen for synthetic drivers of T cell proliferation

Mateusz Legut et al.

Summary: Engineering autologous T cells has significantly improved cancer treatment. CRISPR-based loss-of-function screens have limitations and safety concerns. In this study, overexpression of specific genes enhanced T cell functions and a new method called OverCITE-seq was developed for analyzing genetically engineered T cells. LTBR, a highly ranked gene, showed increased T cell effector functions and resistance to exhaustion. These findings have potential implications for future T cell therapies.

Conscription of Immune Cells by Light-Activatable Silencing NK-Derived Exosome (LASNEO) for Synergetic Tumor Eradication

Mengjie Zhang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new type of light-activatable exosomes derived from NK cells, which can achieve tumor treatment by generating reactive oxygen species and gene silencing. These exosomes not only exhibit strong cytotoxicity, but also recruit various types of immune cells to restore immunological surveillance in the tumor microenvironment. The manufacturing process is simple and controllable, showing great potential.

Redox signaling at the crossroads of human health and disease

Jing Zuo et al.

Summary: Redox biology is crucial in life sciences, as redox processes are closely associated with biological activities. Redox homeostasis is essential for human health, where nonradical reactive oxygen species (ROS) function as key second messengers in modulating physiological redox signaling. However, excessive ROS accumulation, termed oxidative stress (OS), leads to biomolecule damage and the development of various diseases. Understanding the roles of redox signaling networks under physiological and pathological conditions is important for the development of redox medicine and treatment of redox-relevant diseases.

Summary: Every year, the American Cancer Society projects the numbers of new cancer cases and deaths in the United States, with the latest data showing a significant decline in lung cancer mortality, while prostate cancer mortality has plateaued and breast and colorectal cancer mortality have slowed. Improvements in treatment have accelerated progress against lung cancer, leading to a record drop in overall cancer mortality.

CDK1, the Other 'Master Regulator' of Autophagy

Richard Odle et al.

Summary: Autophagy and cap-dependent mRNA translation are tightly regulated during mitosis, with a switch from mTORC1 to CDK1-mediated regulation being a significant factor. Recent studies have shown repression of autophagy initiation and maintenance of cap-dependent mRNA translation even when mTORC1 activity is repressed. This highlights the complexity of regulation during mitosis and the need for further research in this area.

CO-Releasing Molecule-2 Prevents Acute Kidney Injury through Suppression of ROS-Fyn-ER Stress Signaling in Mouse Model

Md Jamal Uddin et al.

Summary: Acute kidney injury (AKI) commonly occurs in critically ill patients in hospitals and is characterized by oxidative stress and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. The research found that CO-releasing molecule-2 (CORM2) efficiently inhibited ER stress-mediated AKI and may be a potential treatment option for this condition.
