Is the anterior approach suitable for laparoscopic right hemihepatectomy in patients with large HCC (5-10 cm)? A propensity score analysis

Yufu Peng et al.

Summary: Laparoscopic right hemihepatectomy via the anterior approach (ALRH) is safe and feasible for patients with large HCC, with superior perioperative outcomes and equivalent oncological outcomes compared to open right hemihepatectomy via the anterior approach (AORH).

Impact of Three-Dimensional (3D) Visualization on Laparoscopic Hepatectomy for Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Kin Pan Au et al.

Summary: The impact of three-dimensional (3D) visualization on laparoscopic hepatectomy for hepatocellular carcinoma was investigated in this retrospective study. The results showed that the availability of 3D laparoscopy has led to a significant increase in the proportion of laparoscopic major hepatectomies and difficult resections. After propensity score matching, patients who underwent 3D laparoscopic hepatectomy had comparable operative time and blood loss with those who underwent 2D laparoscopic hepatectomy, but had lower overall complications. Furthermore, patients who underwent 3D laparoscopic major hepatectomy had a shorter hospital stay compared to those who underwent open surgery.

Laparoscopic major hepatectomy for hepatocellular carcinoma in elderly patients: a multicentric propensity score-based analysis

Antonella Delvecchio et al.

Summary: This study compared short-term and long-term outcomes between laparoscopic major hepatectomy (LMH) and open major hepatectomy (OMH) in elderly patients with HCC, showing that LMH had lower postoperative complications and shorter hospital stay compared to OMH, with comparable mortality rates at 90 days and overall survival rates at 1, 3, and 5 years. The study concluded that LMH is safe and feasible in elderly patients with HCC.

Application of controlled low central venous pressure during hepatectomy: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Tie-shuai Liu et al.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis found that controlled low central venous pressure (CVP) effectively reduces blood loss during liver resection and significantly affects alanine transaminase levels in the early postoperative period. Compared with the control group, the low CVP group had significantly reduced blood transfusion volume and number of patients requiring transfusion. The incidence of complications was similar between the two groups.

Narrow-Margin Hepatectomy Resulted in Higher Recurrence and Lower Overall Survival for R0 Resection Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Lihong Liu et al.

Summary: Patients with narrow resection margin had higher recurrence rate and worse survival compared to those with wide resection margin. Adjuvant local treatment, such as radiotherapy, may benefit these patients. Postoperative SBRT for cases with positive margin showed low recurrence rate and no marginal recurrence.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Laparoscopic and open liver resection for hepatocellular carcinoma with Child-Pugh B cirrhosis: multicentre propensity score-matched study

R. Troisi et al.

Summary: For patients with Child-Pugh B cirrhosis undergoing liver resection for HCC, laparoscopic surgery is associated with lower blood loss, lower morbidity, and shorter hospital stay compared to open surgery. However, the 5-year overall and disease-free survival rates do not significantly differ between the two approaches. Patients without preoperative portal hypertension and Child-Pugh B7 cirrhosis may benefit most from laparoscopic liver surgery.
