Shear orientation of nematic phases of clay nanosheets: processing of barrier coatings

Maximilian Roehrl et al.

Summary: Understanding the formation and decay time of particle structures in suspensions under shear forces is essential for processes like wet-film coating. By investigating the effective viscosity of nematic suspensions, information on the formation of textured films and the lifetime of platelet textures was obtained. This information was used to identify geometric requirements for slot dies in producing barrier liners with nanosheet layers oriented parallel to PET substrates, resulting in green and simple coatings with high oxygen barrier properties.

Bright, noniridescent structural coloration from clay mineral nanosheet suspensions

Paulo H. Michels-Brito et al.

Summary: By using suspended two-dimensional nanosheets of a clay mineral, researchers have achieved bright and non-iridescent structural colors. The brightness is improved by using double clay nanosheets, optimizing the clay refractive index that otherwise hampers structural coloration. The distance between layers and the structural colors can be controlled precisely and reproducibly by clay concentration and ionic strength, and obtaining non-iridescence is easily accomplished in this system.

Summary: Colloidal clay mineral nanosheets exhibit angular-independent structural colors after desalting. The color can be tuned by varying the average nanosheet size and concentration, and the low angular-dependence of the structural color is a first for nanosheet systems. This system is expected to be an environmentally friendly and low-cost material for various applications.

Nanoscale-Structured Hybrid Bragg Stacks with Orientation- and Composition-Dependent Mechanical and Thermal Transport Properties: Implications for Nacre Mimetics and Heat Management Applications

Theresa Doerres et al.

Summary: Layered nanomaterials, such as nacre, have fascinated researchers due to their unique mechanical, barrier, optical, and transport properties. In this study, we mimicked nacre by creating inorganic/polymer hybrid Bragg stacks with alternating fluorohectorite clay and poly(ethylene glycol) layers. Our results showed that these materials had excellent reinforcement properties, with a high clay volume fraction and a high Young's modulus along the aligned clays. Additionally, the films showed low heat conductivity and high anisotropy. Overall, this work reveals the potential of aligned layered clay nanocomposites for various applications.
