Toward Neuro-Oncologic Clinical Trials of High-Dose-Rate Synchrotron Microbeam Radiation Therapy: First Treatment of a Spontaneous Canine Brain Tumor

Jean-Francois Adam et al.

Summary: This study conducted a clinical trial of three-dimensional conformal synchrotron x-ray microbeam radiation therapy (MRT) for a spontaneous intracranial tumor in a large animal. The treatment was successful, leading to significant improvement in the dog's quality of life and reduction in tumor size. This research is crucial for the clinical transfer of MRT for deep-seated tumor treatment.

Summary: Microbeam radiotherapy has the potential to cure therapy-resistant malignant tumors. Researchers have developed a powerful ex vivo tool to assess the adverse effects of microbeam irradiation on the heart. In a pilot experiment, they found that the cardiac function was preserved despite temporary arrhythmias.

Microbeam Irradiation as a Simultaneously Integrated Boost in a Conventional Whole-Brain Radiotherapy Protocol

Felix Jaekel et al.

Summary: Microbeam radiotherapy (MRT) has shown high therapeutic potential and good preservation of normal tissue function. This study investigated the suitability of MRT as a simultaneously integrated boost (SIB) in conventional whole-brain irradiation (WBRT) and found that delivering MRT SIB on the first day of the irradiation course had a stronger tumoricidal effect on cancer cells.

Screening for irradiation vasculopathy by intima-media thickness sonography in head and neck cancer patients

D. Strueder et al.

Summary: Post-irradiation vasculopathy is a severe form of atherosclerosis that affects head and neck cancer survivors' prognosis. A study on carotid artery IMT in irradiated patients found a dose-dependent increase in IMT following radiotherapy, with the risk for a pathological value rising significantly in the short-term. The correlation between IMT and radiotherapy was comparable to established cardiovascular risk factors.

Radio-induced esophageal motility disorders: An unrecognized diagnosis

V. Vitton et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the prevalence of esophageal motility disorders (EMD) diagnosed by high-resolution esophageal manometry (HREM) after cervical or thoracic radiation therapy. The results showed that dysphagia was the most frequent symptom, 60% of patients had abnormal esophageal motility, with 15% presenting with major motility disorder.

Perspectives for microbeam irradiation at the SYRMEP beamline

Elisabeth Schueltke et al.

Summary: Research has shown that microbeam irradiation can effectively control malignant tumor cells, with a reduction of approximately 80% observed in melanoma cells after MBI. While high energy is essential for achieving high dose rates, lower energy spectra may be equally suitable or even advantageous for in vitro studies and superficial tumor treatments.

Synchrotron Microbeam Radiation Therapy for the Treatment of Lung Carcinoma: A Preclinical Study

Verdiana Trappetti et al.

Summary: The study found that both synchrotron microbeam radiation therapy (S-MRT) and synchrotron broad-beam (S-BB) therapy can prolong the survival of mice, but mice in the S-MRT group developed severe pulmonary edema. Postmortem examination revealed that mice in the S-MRT group had smaller tumor volume and did not show any decline in health, while mice in the S-BB group developed pulmonary fibrosis.

Impact of prostatic radiation therapy on bladder contractility and innervation

Alexander C. Turner et al.

Summary: In a rat model, radiation therapy to the prostate and major pelvic ganglia resulted in early changes in gene expression of ChAT in the MPG, as well as bladder cholinergic axon profiles and smooth muscle content, which normalized over time. Bladder contractility decreased early after therapy but increased by 10 weeks. Long-term changes to the MPG and increased bladder cholinergic axons may contribute to radiation-induced bladder dysfunction in prostate cancer survivors.
