A Review: Inductively Coupled Plasma Reactive Ion Etching of Silicon Carbide

Summary: This paper provides a review of the inductively coupled plasma reactive ion etching (ICP-RIE) method for silicon carbide etching. The experimental results show that the addition of O-2 and changes in RIE and ICP power have an impact on the etching rate of the Cr mask and the selectivity of SiC/Cr etching. SiC, with its attractive properties, holds great potential benefits for advances in submicron semiconductor processing technology.

Heme cross-feeding can augment Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis dual species biofilms

Summary: This study reports the enhanced biofilm biomass resulting from the combination of Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis, which is dependent on the activation of E. faecalis aerobic respiration. S. aureus provides heme to activate E. faecalis respiration, and E. faecalis gelatinase activity facilitates heme extraction. This interspecies interaction and metabolic cross-feeding may explain the frequent co-occurrence of these microbes in biofilm-associated infections.

Enterococcus Virulence and Resistant Traits Associated with Its Permanence in the Hospital Environment

Summary: Enterococcus are opportunistic pathogens of increasing importance in clinical settings, particularly in terms of hospital-acquired infections. These bacteria exhibit intrinsic and extrinsic resistance to various classes of antibiotics, with a particular emphasis on vancomycin-resistant enterococci. In addition to resistance, enterococci possess other characteristics such as the ability to form biofilms and exchange genetic information, enhancing their survival in harsh environments. These traits, along with reports of decreased susceptibility to biocides, contribute to the persistent presence of enterococci in hospitals and their role in causing difficult-to-treat infections.
