Genome sequence and transcriptome of Sorbus pohuashanensis provide insights into population evolution and leaf sunburn response

Dongxue Zhao et al.

Summary: The study sequenced and assembled the reference genome of Sorbus pohuashanensis using PacBio long reads, identified genetic variations related to stress resistance, and provided insights into the evolution process and genomic background of Sorbus spp. The phylogenetic clusters based on leaf shape were consistent with genetic analysis, showing natural hybridization between groups and different levels of nucleotide diversity.RNA-seq data highlighted the importance of flavonoid biosynthesis and heat-shock proteins in protection against sunburn, indicating potential mechanisms for stress resistance in Sorbus spp.

High-throughput screening of secondary metabolites by Sorbus pohuashanensis cells under environmental stress using UHPLC-QTOF combined with AntDAS

Jian Yang et al.

Summary: This study developed a high-throughput screening method for differential secondary metabolites produced by medicinal plants under environmental stress using UHPLC-QTOF technology. Results showed that S. pohuashanensis cells quickly responded to Harpin protein and Cd2+ with a significant positive correlation between their concentration and induction time within a certain range.

Antifungal Biphenyl Derivatives from Sorbus pohuashanensis Leaves Infected by Alternaria tenuissi and Their Effect against Crop Pathogens

Chenggang Song et al.

Summary: Eight natural biphenyl-type phytoalexins isolated from the leaves of Sorbus pohuashanensis showed antifungal effects against Alternaria tenuissi, with some compounds also exhibiting significant activity against other crop pathogens. The compounds were found to inhibit the mycelial growth of A. tenuissi and protect tobacco leaves from fungal infection. Additionally, structure-activity relationships and biosynthesis of these compounds were speculated in the study.

Pathogen and drought stress affect cell wall and phytohormone signaling to shape host responses in a sorghum COMT bmr12 mutant

Maya Khasin et al.

Summary: As global climate change intensifies, the interaction of biotic and abiotic stresses threatens agricultural practices. The study found that alterations in the composition of the secondary cell wall affect immunity by influencing phenolic composition and phytohormone signaling, leading to the action of defense pathways. The defense response in sorghum plants infected with pathogens under water limitation may be enhanced by alterations in secondary metabolite biosynthesis and modification in SA and JA signal transduction pathways.

Novel dibenzofuran and biphenyl phytoalexins from Sorbus pohuashanensis suspension cell and their antimicrobial activities

Yuan Gao et al.

Summary: Two novel sulfur-containing dibenzofurans and unprecedented biphenyl glycosides were isolated from Sorbus pohuashanensis suspension cell induced by yeast extract. Compound 1 stood out for its rare benzothiazole moiety. These compounds showed antimicrobial activities against pathogenic fungi and drug-resistant bacteria, with compound 7 exhibiting significant antibacterial activity against methicinllin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.
