Nasal and systemic inflammation in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

Nicolai Obling et al.

Summary: This study investigated the inflammatory profile in the upper airway and serum of COPD patients, and found that patients with high upper airway symptoms displayed signs of eosinophilic and neutrophilic inflammation, as well as elevated levels of IL-1 beta and IL-3.

Autophagy in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Peter J. Barnes et al.

Summary: Autophagy is a cellular process that removes damaged molecules and organelles, and abnormalities in autophagy may contribute to the pathogenesis of chronic diseases like asthma and COPD. Autophagy can be either increased or decreased depending on the cell type and environment, making it challenging to target therapeutically. Some existing drugs can activate or inhibit autophagy, but more selective drugs are being developed.

Oxidative Stress in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Peter J. Barnes

Summary: Patients with COPD exhibit increased oxidative stress in their lungs, which can be caused by external factors such as smoking and air pollution, as well as internal factors such as inflammation. Oxidative stress plays a major role in driving the pathology of COPD, leading to chronic inflammation, cellular senescence, impaired autophagy, and reduced repair mechanisms. Antioxidants may be effective in modifying the disease progression of COPD.

Interleukin-13 promotes cellular senescence through inducing mitochondrial dysfunction in IgG4-related sialadenitis

Mengqi Zhu et al.

Summary: This study revealed that IL-13 plays a critical role in inducing cellular senescence in salivary gland epithelial cells through elevated mitochondrial oxidative stress in the context of IgG4-related sialadenitis. IL-13 activates p-STAT6 and increases mtROS levels, leading to decreased mitochondrial membrane potential and expression/activity of SOD2. IL-13 also enhances the interaction between p-STAT6 and CBP, resulting in reduced transcriptional activity of CREB on SOD2.

Environmental allergens house dust mite-induced asthma is associated with ferroptosis in the lungs

Weifeng Tang et al.

Summary: The translation of previous studies indicated that allergens such as house dust mites can induce allergic asthma. The study used a mouse asthma model to determine the effect of house dust mite exposure on allergic asthma. The results showed an increase in airway hyperresponsiveness, inflammation, mucus secretion, and mitochondrial changes, indicating the involvement of lipid peroxidation and ferroptosis in the pathogenesis of allergic asthma.

IL-13 Alleviates Cardiomyocyte Apoptosis by Improving Fatty Acid Oxidation in Mitochondria

Xiaoyu Guo et al.

Summary: IL-13 plays an important role in protecting septic cardiomyocytes by improving mitochondrial function and morphology. The results suggest that IL-13 could be a potential promising target for SIC treatment.
