Social innovation for biodiversity: A literature review and research challenges

Rafael Ziegler et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the research on social innovation and biodiversity and highlights its importance in addressing unsustainability. The findings suggest a strong focus on civic action for changing practices, with limited attention on policy-driven and consumer/producer-driven innovations. Furthermore, there is a lack of critical perspective on the negative or unintended consequences of social innovation. The paper proposes three focal areas for future research, practice, and policy: nature-based solutions, participatory governance, and technology for tackling biodiversity loss.

Causality and explanation in socio-technical transitions research: Mobilising epistemological insights from the wider social sciences

Frank W. Geels

Summary: In response to criticisms, this article explores the epistemological foundations of socio-technical transitions research and argues that critical realism is the most suitable approach for explaining the characteristics of these transitions. It discusses the importance of complex causalities in explaining transitions and suggests improvements to existing transition frameworks. The article also considers the role of theories and the relevance of conceptual frameworks, causal mechanisms, process tracing, and narrative explanation in socio-technical transitions research. Theoretical and methodological suggestions for improving transition research are provided throughout.

De-centering transitions: Low-carbon innovation from the peripheries

Sergio Tirado-Herrero et al.

Summary: Socio-technical transitions have been receiving attention, but concerns have been raised about elitist characteristics in low-carbon transitions. Recent calls to 'decentre' transitions focus on social and spatial dynamics in peripheral areas. Transitioning from the peripheries offers opportunities for low-carbon innovation and deep structural transformations, but also poses risks of creating new core-periphery dependencies and reinforcing elite power.
