Curcumin analog HO-3867 triggers apoptotic pathways through activating JNK1/2 signalling in human oral squamous cell carcinoma cells

Chi-Wei Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, the therapeutic effect and mode of action of the curcumin analog, HO-3867, against human oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cells were explored. The results showed that HO-3867 effectively suppressed the growth of OSCC cells and induced apoptosis through the c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK)1/2 pathway.

Curcumin analog, GO-Y078, induces HO-1 transactivation-mediated apoptotic cell death of oral cancer cells by triggering MAPK pathways and AP-1 DNA-binding activity

Ming-Hsien Chien et al.

Summary: The synthetic analogue of curcumin, GO-Y078, shows cytostatic effect against oral squamous cell carcinoma cells through multiple mechanisms, including cell-cycle arrest and apoptosis induction. GO-Y078 transcriptionally induces upregulation of the HO-1 gene by activating the p38/JNK1/2 pathways, which leads to caspase-mediated apoptosis. Clinical data suggests that high expression of HO-1 in head and neck cancer patients is associated with favorable prognosis. The results provide new insights into the therapeutic potential of GO-Y078 for OSCC.

FLLL32 Triggers Caspase-Mediated Apoptotic Cell Death in Human Oral Cancer Cells by Regulating the p38 Pathway

Chun-Wen Su et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that FLLL32 induces apoptosis in oral cancer cells through the activation of the p38 MAPK signaling pathway, increasing the expression of cleaved caspase-3 and HO-1. These findings suggest that FLLL32 may be a potential therapeutic agent for oral cancer.

Expression Dynamics of Heme Oxygenase-1 in Tumor Cells and the Host Contributes to the Progression of Tumors

Jun Fang et al.

Summary: Heme oxygenase (HO-1) is crucial for cellular protection against stresses and diseases, but its overexpression in tumors is also commonly observed. Maintaining a balance of HO-1 levels in both host and tumor cells is essential for cancer occurrence, progression, and prognosis, with high HO-1 levels in the host being beneficial for cancer prevention and suppressing HO-1 in tumor cells possibly becoming a therapeutic strategy.

Activation of Nrf2/HO-1 signaling: An important molecular mechanism of herbal medicine in the treatment of atherosclerosis via the protection of vascular endothelial cells from oxidative stress

Qing Zhang et al.

Summary: This study summarized natural compounds that exert protective effects against oxidative stress in vascular endothelial cells (ECs), including phenylpropanoids, flavonoids, terpenoids, and alkaloids. These compounds alleviate EC apoptosis by activating the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway, showing potential for the treatment of atherosclerosis.
