Risk Factors for Severe COVID-19 in Children

Rebecca C. Woodruff et al.

Summary: This study describes population-based rates and risk factors for pediatric severe COVID-19. The study found that children under the age of 2 with chronic lung disease, neurologic disorders, cardiovascular disease, prematurity, and airway abnormality, as well as children aged 2 to 17 depending on a feeding tube, with diabetes mellitus, and with obesity, are more susceptible to severe COVID-19. The results of this study are important for identifying high-risk children and implementing prevention efforts, including vaccination.

Staphylococcus aureus Internalization in Osteoblast Cells: Mechanisms, Interactions and Biochemical Processes. What Did We Learn from Experimental Models?

Stefano Stracquadanio et al.

Summary: Bacterial internalization is a strategy used by non-intracellular microorganisms to evade the host immune system and survive in the human body. Staphylococcus aureus interacts with and infects osteoblasts, leading to osteomyelitis and infections. The MG-63 osteoblastic cell line is the best traditional model for studying these interactions, although more representative 3D models have also been investigated.

Laboratory Diagnosis of 37 Cases of Bartonella Endocarditis Based on Enzyme Immunoassay and Real-Time PCR

Lev Shapira et al.

Summary: Bartonella spp., mainly B. quintana and B. henselae, are common causes of culture-negative endocarditis and their diagnosis relies on serology and PCR. A new enzyme immunoassay and multiplex real-time PCR, which identified additional Bartonella species, showed promise in diagnosing Bartonella endocarditis. However, caution is necessary due to cross-reactivity between B. henselae and B. quintana, as well as with other bacterial infections.
