Clinical predictors of post-injury anxiety in adolescent patients following concussion

Brandon L. Gillie et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to examine predictors of post-injury anxiety following concussion among youth aged 10-18 years. The results showed that pre-injury panic symptoms and total symptom severity were the most robust predictors of mild or greater anxiety, while non-SRC injury type, vestibular dysfunction, and pre-injury panic symptoms were the most robust predictors of clinical anxiety. These findings highlight the importance of evaluating emotional functioning and different types of anxiety in the management of concussion among adolescents.

Fatigue and cognitive impairment in Post-COVID-19 Syndrome: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Felicia Ceban et al.

Summary: Post-COVID-19 syndrome, characterized by persistent symptoms after resolution of acute infection, is associated with significant fatigue and cognitive impairment. This study aimed to quantify the proportion of individuals experiencing fatigue and cognitive impairment 12 or more weeks after COVID-19 diagnosis, and to explore the inflammatory and functional consequences of post-COVID-19 syndrome. The results showed that a significant proportion of individuals continue to experience fatigue and cognitive impairment even after 12 or more weeks of COVID-19 diagnosis. Additionally, some individuals showed elevated levels of inflammatory markers and significant functional impairment.

Comparability of (Post-Concussion) Symptoms across Time in Individuals after Traumatic Brain Injury: Results from the CENTER-TBI Study

Diego Rivera et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the long-term changes in RPQ symptoms from three to twelve months after TBI and identified factors related to these symptoms. The results showed that the three-factor structure of RPQ remains stable within one year after TBI. Sex, injury cause, and prior psychiatric problems were found to be related to both the factor structure and total score of RPQ.

Optimal Methods for Reducing Proxy-Introduced Bias on Patient-Reported Outcome Measurements for Group-Level Analyses

Brittany Lapin et al.

Summary: The study found that various methods for handling proxy-completed data resulted in different levels of bias in estimating PRO scores or regression estimates. Proxy substitution with adjustment had low bias with 50% proxy-respondents, while other methods provided more accurate estimations with <20% proxy-respondents. Bias remained low regardless of the domain or sample size but increased with larger percentages of proxy-respondents.

Summary: The study found that anxiety and self-reported physical symptoms are key factors influencing self-perceived recovery in adolescents with concussion. Self-perceived recovery as an outcome measure can provide a more holistic understanding of adolescents' experiences after concussion.

Explaining Outcome Differences between Men and Women following Mild Traumatic Brain Injury

Ana Mikolic et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that women had worse outcomes following mild traumatic brain injury (TBI), and this was only partly explained by psychiatric history. Other factors beyond specified variables seem to underlie the observed differences between men and women in TBI outcomes. Future research should explore further aspects of gender roles and identity, as well as biological factors, to understand sex and gender differences in TBI outcomes.

Child- compared with parent-report ratings on psychosocial measures following a mild traumatic brain injury among youth with persistent post-concussion symptoms

Ashleigh M. Johnson et al.

Summary: The study aimed to compare child- and parent-report ratings on various assessment tools among children with persistent post-concussive symptoms. Results showed that children tended to report more symptoms but better functioning compared to parents, with greater differences observed in females and the 16-18 age group.

Psychometric Properties of the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale-7 Item (GAD-7) in a Large Sample of Chinese Adolescents

Jiangang Sun et al.

Summary: Anxiety symptoms are common among adolescents, and a well-validated tool such as the GAD-7 can be used for timely interventions. The study investigated the reliability and validity of the GAD-7 in Chinese adolescents, finding higher scores in female and older adolescents, good internal consistency, and a unidimensional structure.

Invariance of the Bifactor Structure of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI) Symptoms on the Rivermead Postconcussion Symptoms Questionnaire Across Time, Demographic Characteristics, and Clinical Groups: A TRACK-TBI Study

Summary: This study used a bifactor model to reveal the structure of the Rivermead Postconcussion Symptoms Questionnaire (RPQ) and found that it has multidimensional features. Results showed that the RPQ exhibited strict measurement invariance across different factors, which may help differentiate symptom expression patterns in the future.
