Immune System Dysfunction and Inflammation in Hemodialysis Patients: Two Sides of the Same Coin

Susanna Campo et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the pathways related to immune system dysfunction and inflammation in hemodialysis patients. Thrombogenicity and oxidative stress are considered important characteristics of biocompatibility in hemodialysis. Immune dysfunction and inflammation are closely linked with uremic toxins in hemodialysis patients, affecting clinical outcomes and mortality.

Serum level of high mobility group box protein-1 and prognosis of patients with end-stage renal disease on hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis

Linyan Chen et al.

Summary: This study found that the HMGB1 levels in HD patients are higher than in PD patients, and the levels decrease with HD or PD treatment and are positively correlated with IL-6 and TNF-alpha. Patients with higher HMGB1 levels had more complications but no difference in survival rates. Quality of life was associated with different dialysis methods.

Updates on hemodialysis techniques with a common denominator: The personalization of the dialytic therapy

Paolo Monardo et al.

Summary: Hemodialysis is a life-saving therapy for patients with end-stage renal disease, but the rising prevalence of multi-morbidity in dialyzed patients is driven by various factors such as aging population and incomplete correction of uremia. Different dialysis techniques and procedures are available to meet the specific clinical and biochemical problems of each patient, and new technical innovations are continuously being developed to improve dialysis outcomes.

HMGB-1 and TGFβ-1 highlight immuno-inflammatory and fibrotic processes before proteinuria onset in pediatric patients with Alport syndrome

R. Chimenz et al.

Summary: ALP patients with normal renal function exhibited higher levels of serum and urinary HMGB1 and TGF-beta1 compared to healthy subjects. HMGB1 and TGF-beta1 were correlated with each other and with markers of renal function and damage. Urinary biomarkers did not correlate with eGFR, while sHMGB1 and sTGF-beta1 were negatively related to filtration rate.
