Hypoglossal nerve stimulation for obstructive sleep apnea: updated position paper of the German Society of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, Head and Neck Surgery

Armin Steffen et al.

Summary: Hypoglossal nerve stimulation (HNS) is now considered an established treatment for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in Germany. There are three different HNS systems available, each with its own technical details. Studies and reports exist for different types of HNS, and it is important to evaluate the patient's condition and consider other treatment options before deciding on HNS.

No changes in nocturnal respiration with hypoglossal neurostimulation therapy for obstructive sleep apnoea

Adel Bachour et al.

Summary: In this study, 15 patients treated with Hypoglossal Neurostimulation therapy (HGNS) were analyzed for changes in AHI and ODI4 parameters. The results showed no significant changes in AHI and ODI4 after HGNS therapy. More extensive multicentre randomized controlled trials are needed before considering widespread international use of HGNS.

The Hypoglossal Nerve Stimulation as a Novel Therapy for Treating Obstructive Sleep Apnea-A Literature Review

Summary: OSA is a common sleep disorder with CPAP as the gold standard treatment, but adherence is a major challenge. HGNS is an effective alternative therapy for patients who cannot tolerate CPAP, with superior adherence compared to CPAP. Further developments are needed to ensure safety.

Summary: Data from ADHERE demonstrate high efficacy rates for UAS. Although surgical response rate differs between BMI32 and BMI35 patient groups, the AHI and ESS reduction is similar. Discomfort affects therapy adherence and efficacy. Thus, proper therapy settings adjustment to ensure comfort is imperative to improve outcomes.
