Does the Relationship Between Bone Cement and the Intravertebral Cleft of Kummell Disease Affect the Efficacy of PKP?

Nan-Ning Lv et al.

Summary: The relationship between the distribution of bone cement and the intravertebral cleft in Kummell disease was studied to evaluate the clinical effect of percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP). The study found that the distribution pattern of bone cement filled with intravertebral cleft and diffusely distributed around the fissures resulted in better outcomes.

Risk factors of vertebral re-fracture after PVP or PKP for osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures, especially in Eastern Asia: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Chuanqiang Dai et al.

Summary: This study investigates the incidence and risk factors of vertebral re-fracture after percutaneous vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty. The results suggest that female sex, older age, lower bone mineral density, and bone cement leakages increase the risk of re-fracture. The occurrence of re-fracture is significantly associated with gender, age, and bone mineral density in Eastern Asia. Anterior-to-posterior vertebral body height ratio and visual analog scale score are higher in the refracture group, while kyphotic angle correction ratio is smaller in Eastern Asia. Anti-osteoporosis treatment may serve as a protective factor.

Comparative Efficacy of Three Minimally Invasive Procedures for Kummell's Disease: A Systematic Review and Network Meta-Analysis

Yajian Wang et al.

Summary: This study summarized the pros and cons of percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP), percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP), and bone-filling mesh containers (BFC) in the treatment of Kummell's disease (KD) through network meta-analysis. The results showed no statistical difference between the three procedures in terms of improving patients' clinical symptoms. PKP was most likely to be the most effective in correcting kyphosis, while BFC was likely to be the most effective in managing the occurrence of cement leakage. No statistical differences were found in the incidence of new vertebral fractures in adjacent segments.

Risk factors for bone cement displacement after percutaneous vertebral augmentation for osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures

Xiangcheng Gao et al.

Summary: High restoration of Cobb angle, cement leakage (anterior edge), small degree of bone cement interweaving, non-targeted location of bone cement, short duration of brace wearing and non-postoperative osteoporosis treatment were identified as independent risk factors for bone cement displacement after percutaneous vertebral augmentation (PVA).

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the risk factors of new VCF after PVP or PKP. The results showed that a low HU value was an independent risk factor for new VCF after PVP or PKP.

Risk factors for secondary fractures to percutaneous vertebroplasty for osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures: a systematic review

Wei Mao et al.

Summary: Patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures undergoing percutaneous vertebroplasty may have risk factors for secondary fractures, including additional history of fracture, age, bone mineral density, bone cement leakage, intravertebral fracture clefts, and Cobb Angle, but the height of vertebral anterior and body mass index are not correlated with the risk of secondary fractures.

Machine Learning Applications for the Prediction of Bone Cement Leakage in Percutaneous Vertebroplasty

Wenle Li et al.

Summary: The study identified injection volume of bone cement, surgery time, and multiple vertebral fractures as independent predictors of bone cement leakage. Among the six machine learning algorithms tested, Random Forest model performed the best with an AUC of 0.898, leading to the development of an online calculator for predicting the risk of bone cement leakage.

Is Kummell's Disease a Misdiagnosed and/or an Underreported Complication of Osteoporotic Vertebral Compression Fractures? A Pattern of the Condition and Available Treatment Modalities

Olga Adamska et al.

Summary: Minimally invasive surgery and conservative treatment are effective options for patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures at risk for Kummell's disease. While there are inconsistencies in the efficacy of certain treatment methods, managing osteoporosis remains crucial, emphasizing the importance of prevention and early diagnosis.
