Sex-specific developmental trajectories of eczema from infancy to age 26 years: A birth cohort study

Ali H. Ziyab et al.

Summary: This study investigated the developmental trajectories of eczema from infancy to early adulthood, identifying different patterns and risk factors influencing disease development. Distinct trajectories of eczema were found in males and females, with predisposing risk factors such as FLG gene variants, parental history of eczema, maternal eczema, and high birthweight. Results suggest that males and females may experience diverse courses of eczema development.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the prevalence and severity of asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis, and eczema in school children worldwide. The results demonstrate significant variations in the burden of these diseases among the countries studied, with a considerable burden observed in all regions.

Prevalence and characteristics of atopic dermatitis among young adult females and males-report from the Swedish population-based study BAMSE

E. K. Johansson et al.

Summary: This Swedish study investigated the prevalence and characteristics of atopic dermatitis (AD) among young adults. The results showed that AD is a common disease among young adults, and even though more females than males have AD at 24 years, adult onset of AD seems to be equally prevalent among both sexes in young adulthood.

Prevalence of eczema between cesarean-born and vaginal-born infants within 1 year of age: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Ziyu Xiong et al.

Summary: This study aims to quantify the difference in prevalence of eczema between cesarean-born and vaginal-born infants within 1 year of age. The results showed that the prevalence of eczema in cesarean-born infants was higher than in vaginal-born infants, and this difference was influenced by country, study design, and method of ascertainment.

The global burden of atopic dermatitis: lessons from the Global Burden of Disease Study 1990-2017

M. R. Laughter et al.

Summary: The global burden of atopic dermatitis (AD) has remained stable from 1990 to 2017, with significant geographical variation among different countries. Lifestyle factors, linked to affluence, are likely important disease drivers, and further development of the GBD methodology is needed to better understand the variations in disease burden related to environmental risk factors.

Impact of cigarette smoke on physical-chemical and molecular proprieties of human skin in an ex vivo model

Giuseppe Percoco et al.

Summary: The study focused on the effects of cigarette smoke on skin aging exposome using human skin explants exposed to cigarette smoke. Results showed a decrease in total surface free energy, increased TEWL and skin pH, and downregulation of mitochondrial genes in cigarette smoke-treated HSE. These changes indicate alterations in skin barrier and increased skin permeability due to oxidation of lipids at HSE surface. Mitochondrial functions were impacted, and oxidized lipids failed to be eliminated, leading to skin barrier alteration.

Swati Garg et al.

Summary: Dermatologists are more likely to prescribe sedating antihistamines, while non-dermatologists prefer non-sedating antihistamines. Patients under 21 years old and Black patients are more likely to receive sedating antihistamines than non-sedating antihistamines.

Sleep Disturbance in School-Aged Children with Atopic Dermatitis: Prevalence and Severity in a Cross-Sectional Sample

Anna B. Fishbein et al.

Summary: The study estimated a prevalence rate of 66.9% for sleep disturbance in children aged 5 to 17 with AD, with the highest odds of severe sleep disturbance in moderate to severe AD. It was found that itch intensity and low income were predictors of parent proxy-reported sleep disturbance. Sleep disturbance was associated with neuropsychiatric impairment, including depression, anxiety, and inattention, in children with AD.

Atopic dermatitis trajectories to age 8 years in the GUSTO cohort

Noor H. A. Suaini et al.

Summary: Three different trajectories of atopic dermatitis (AD) were identified in a birth cohort study in Singapore, each associated with different risk factors and prognostic implications. Early-onset transient AD was linked to male gender, family history of atopy, house dust mite sensitization and wheezing; early-onset persistent AD was associated with antenatal/intrapartum antibiotic use, food sensitization and wheezing; late-onset persistent AD was related to family history of atopy, house dust mite sensitization, allergic rhinitis and wheezing. Further research is needed to understand the molecular and immunological origins of these phenotypes.

Patterns of Atopic Eczema Disease Activity From Birth Through Midlife in 2 British Birth Cohorts

Katrina Abuabara et al.

Summary: This cohort study identified four subtypes of atopic eczema with distinct patterns of disease activity, predicting differences based on sex at birth and early life factors. The high subtype was associated with asthma and rhinitis, while the increasing subtype showed a higher risk of poor self-reported general and mental health in midlife.
