Carbapenem Resistance in Acinetobacter nosocomialis and Acinetobacter junii Conferred by Acquisition of blaOXA-24/40 and Genetic Characterization of the Transmission Mechanism between Acinetobacter Genomic Species

Cristina Lasarte-Monterrubio et al.

Summary: This study characterized the development of carbapenem resistance in clinical isolates of Acinetobacter junii and Acinetobacter nosocomialis due to the acquisition of a plasmid-borne bla(OXA-24/40) gene, as well as the dissemination of this gene between species of Acinetobacter for the first time. The presence of a new plasmid carrying the carbapenem-resistance gene bla(OXA-24/40) was identified in both strains, facilitating the horizontal transfer of carbapenem resistance. The identification of plasmids similar to the GR12 group carrying bla(OXA-24/40) in multiple Acinetobacter species suggests a concerning dissemination and spread of carbapenem resistance in this bacterial genus.

Occurrence of antibiotic resistance genes and multidrug-resistant bacteria during wastewater treatment processes

Mingyeong Kang et al.

Summary: Wastewater treatment plants are potential reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes and multidrug-resistant bacteria, with the accumulation of ARGs favoring the development of MRB. The selective forces in active and mixed sludges lead to changes in bacterial diversity and abundance of ARGs. Additionally, genomic analyses reveal that different bacteria species harbor various ARGs, suggesting WWTPs as hotspots for the migration of ARGs and emergence of MRB.

The Influence of Blue Light and the BlsA Photoreceptor on the Oxidative Stress Resistance Mechanisms of Acinetobacter baumannii

Mariah S. Squire et al.

Summary: This study investigates how A. baumannii regulates catalase activity and oxidative stress phenotypes in response to light. It is found that the BlsA protein is involved in this process by regulating the activity of the KatE enzyme. Furthermore, it is discovered that the interaction between BlsA and protein partners is necessary for the regulation of catalase and superoxide dismutase activities. These findings are important for understanding how A. baumannii uses light as a signal to control its crucial oxidative stress resistance mechanisms that contribute to its pathophysiology.

Kosei Shibata et al.

Summary: The blue light-regulated phosphodiesterase BlrP1 from Klebsiella pneumoniae functions as a nonlinear light intensity sensor, with its turnover number of the hydrolysis reaction being proportional to the fraction of the excited protein squared. This suggests that BlrP1 is capable of sensing a strong light environment.

Linkage between bacterial community-mediated hydrogen peroxide detoxification and the growth of Microcystis aeruginosa

Minkyung Kim et al.

Summary: The study found that under high light and organic-rich conditions, bacteria communities with H2O2 resistance can promote the growth and photosynthetic activity of Microcystis aeruginosa, with Alphaproteobacteria playing a key role, likely by protecting them from the toxicity of H2O2. These bacterial communities have higher catalase activity levels and faster rates of O2 production upon H2O2 detoxification.

A novel decoy strategy for polymyxin resistance in Acinetobacter baumannii

Jaeeun Park et al.

Summary: The modification of outer membrane charge induced by polymyxin B (PMB) in Acinetobacter baumannii leads to PMB-resistant variants and clinical isolates producing outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). Upregulation of the pmr operon and decreased membrane-linkage proteins result in enhanced biofilm formation and protection of susceptible bacteria from PMB, suggesting OMVs function as decoys against PMB. OMVs also protect the microbial community against PMB treatment in anaerobic conditions, indicating their potential clinical significance in antibiotic resistance.
