Genetic Potential of Dissulfurimicrobium hydrothermale, an Obligate Sulfur-Disproportionating Thermophilic Microorganism

Steven Yvenou et al.

Summary: The biochemical pathways of anaerobic sulfur disproportionation are only partially understood. Through genome sequencing and analysis, the microorganism Dissulfurimicrobium hydrothermale Sh68(T) has been identified as capable of growing by disproportionation of inorganic sulfur compounds. The genome of this strain contains genes that may be involved in sulfur disproportionation, as well as a conserved protein of unknown function that may play a role in the first step of elemental sulfur disproportionation.

Methylation-Independent Chemotaxis Systems Are the Norm for Gastric-Colonizing Helicobacter Species

Xiaolin Liu et al.

Summary: This study shows that the presence or absence of CheR and CheB is strongly associated with the niche of Helicobacter species, with gastric species lacking these proteins and enterohepatic species retaining them. The study also suggests that CheR and CheB can serve as markers to distinguish between gastric and enterohepatic Helicobacter species.

Microbial sulfur metabolism and environmental implications

Bo Wu et al.

Summary: Sulfur, as a macroelement, plays a significant role in biochemistry in various environments and systems, interconnected with carbon, nitrogen, and iron cycles. The sulfur cycling mediated by microorganisms has important implications for environmental applications, especially in wastewater treatment and pollution bioremediation. The review comprehensively discusses recent advances in microbial sulfur metabolism and their environmental implications, focusing on challenges and developments for further understanding and application.
