Transition-Metal-Free and Base-Promoted Carbon-Heteroatom Bond Formation via C-N Cleavage of Benzyl Ammonium Salts

Long Liu et al.

Summary: A facile and general method for constructing carbon-heteroatom bonds via C-N cleavage of benzyl ammonium salts under transition-metal-free conditions was reported. The combination of t-BuOK and 18-crown-6 enabled the coupling of a wide range of substituted benzyl ammonium salts with heteroatom nucleophiles. Good functional group tolerance was demonstrated, and scale-up reactions and one-pot syntheses were successfully performed.

Mechanism of the Arene-Limited Nondirected C-H Activation of Arenes with Palladium**

Philipp Wedi et al.

Summary: Recent discovery of palladium catalysts has enabled direct-group-free C-H activation of arenes without excess substrate, allowing for late-stage modification of complex organic molecules. The success lies in the use of two complementary ligands, N-acyl amino acid and N-heterocycle. Mechanistic studies have identified catalytically active species and a transition state model that explains the exceptional activity and selectivity of these catalysts, with potential for further method development.

Palladium-Catalyzed meta-Selective C-H Functionalization by Noncovalent H-Bonding Interaction

Guoshuai Li et al.

Summary: A new palladium-catalyzed meta-selective C-H olefination of aromatic carbonyl compounds was achieved by utilizing noncovalent hydrogen-bonding interaction directed by engineered N,N'-substituted ureas, demonstrating site-selective control without the need for prior stoichiometric installation and removal of directing groups.

Ir-catalyzed proximal and distal C-H borylation of arenes

Chabush Haldar et al.

Summary: Over the past two decades, C-H bond activation and functionalization reaction has been widely used for the construction of carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds. Among them, iridium-catalyzed C-H bond activation and borylation reaction stands out. However, achieving distal (meta and para) selectivity in borylation reactions remains a challenge, with limited reports employing iridium catalysis for this purpose. Recent discoveries in catalyst engineering have shown promising results in selective borylation at proximal (ortho) positions for various substrates.

Transition-metal-free and base promoted C-C bond formation via C-N bond cleavage of organoammonium salts

Tao Zhang et al.

Summary: A transition-metal-free and base promoted C-C bond forming reaction of benzyl C(sp(3))-H bond with organoammonium salts via C-N bond cleavage has been reported. The reaction enables the coupling of benzyl ammonium salts as well as cinnamyl ammonium salt with various benzyl C(sp(3))-H species, producing the corresponding products in moderate to excellent yields with good functional group tolerance. Late stage chemical manipulation allows the transformation of the specific 1,2-diarylethane structure of products into useful olefin compounds via dehydrogenation, demonstrating the utility of this reaction.
