Sex is associated with the persistence of non-optimal vaginal microbiota following treatment for bacterial vaginosis: a prospective cohort study

L. K. Ratten et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the associations between sexual practices, factors, and the composition of the vaginal microbiome (VM) of women treated for bacterial vaginosis (BV). Results showed that ongoing sex with a regular sexual partner (RSP) was associated with a VM comprised of increased relative abundance of non-optimal BV-associated bacteria and a decreased relative abundance of optimal Lactobacillus species.

The Effect of Exogenous Sex Steroids on the Vaginal Microbiota: A Systematic Review

Larissa K. Ratten et al.

Summary: The use of exogenous sex steroids, especially estrogen-containing compounds, may have a positive effect on the vaginal microbiota, promoting an optimal composition. However, the impact of progestin-only contraceptives on the vaginal microbiota is still unclear and requires more research for potential adverse effects on reproductive and sexual health.

Beyond bacterial vaginosis: vaginal lactobacilli and HIV risk

Eric Armstrong et al.

Summary: HIV incidence remains high in Eastern and Southern Africa, particularly affecting women. The prevalence of bacterial vaginosis in African, Caribbean, and other Black (ACB) women is associated with increased risk of HIV acquisition, with Lactobacillus species such as L. crispatus offering better protection compared to the more common species L. iners. Further research is needed to determine the mechanisms behind the varying levels of HIV protection among different Lactobacillus species.

Lactobacillus crispatus thrives in pregnancy hormonal milieu in a Nigerian patient cohort

Nkechi Martina Odogwu et al.

Summary: This study characterized the vaginal microbiome of Nigerian women and found that E2 and P1 levels significantly influenced the vaginal microbiome, with an increasing trend of L. crispatus abundance correlating with increasing E2 and P1 concentrations during pregnancy. A shift from Lactobacillus to non-Lactobacillus profile was observed postnatally in most women, indicating a species-specific link between pregnancy steroid hormone concentration and L. crispatus abundance.

Forensic Analysis of Human Microbiome in Skin and Body Fluids Based on Geographic Location

Hye-Won Cho et al.

Summary: High-throughput DNA sequencing technologies have facilitated in silico forensic analysis of human microbiome. Microbial communities are influenced by geographic, ethnic, lifestyle, and environmental factors, leading to differences in microbiome distribution across body parts and geographic locations. This study utilized the Forensic Microbiome Database to observe and describe variations in microbiomes from different countries and body parts.
