Asymmetric Holmboe instabilities in arrested salt-wedge flows

Adam J. K. Yang et al.

Summary: The asymmetric Holmboe instabilities that form on an arrested salt wedge were investigated in the laboratory. The appearance of different regions in the flow is determined by the spatial variation in the thickness of the saline layer, the shear layer thickness, and the offset between the density interface and velocity interface. The growth of the instabilities is initially consistent with linear stability theory, but becomes nonlinear when the Holmboe wave reaches a steepness ratio of 5 - 7%. The Holmboe wavelength increases downstream along the salt wedge due to the increase in shear layer thickness and gradual acceleration of the upper layer fluid. The predicted wave speed and wavelength are consistent with the laboratory measurements.

Turbulence in forced stratified shear flows

Katherine M. Smith et al.

Summary: Continuously forced stratified shear flows can enhance mixing rates by driving turbulence, leading to three observed regimes: weakly stratified overturning, strongly stratified scouring, and intermediately stratified intermittent. Each regime exhibits unique physical mechanisms affecting mixing efficiency and the broadening or thinning of buoyancy interfaces.

The influence of far field stratification on shear-induced turbulent mixing

S. F. Lewin et al.

Summary: The study compares turbulence properties induced by KHI in two classes of stratified shear flows with different density profiles. The efficiency of mixing is affected by secondary instabilities but not strongly dependent on far field density structure. Various scaling laws and empirical models for computing diapycnal diffusivity are evaluated for their applicability in transient flows.

Turbulent shear layers in a uniformly stratified background: DNS at high Reynolds number

Alexandra VanDine et al.

Summary: Direct numerical simulations were conducted to investigate a stratified shear layer at high Reynolds number, with variations in Richardson number. The study found that at low Richardson numbers, there is a period of thickness contraction in the shear layer during transition to turbulence, and mixing efficiency in the turbulent regime is higher compared to a two-layer density profile.

Summary: Observations of the transition layer (TL) in the ocean surface boundary layer (OSBL) reveal the presence of frequent small scale mixing structures, which are consistent with frequent occurrences and can account for the deepening of the mixed layer and entrainment flux, supporting previous research findings.
