Fabrication of surface composites on different aluminium alloys via friction stir process - A review report

Vivek Kumar Jain et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the process and effects of friction stir processing (FSP) on different grades of aluminium-based metal matrix composites (AMMCs), as well as the impact of various reinforcements on AMMCs. The results show that FSP can improve the mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and wear resistance of the materials. This review provides important knowledge for new researchers in the field of FSP.

Preparation of Silicon Bronze-Based Hybrid Nanocomposites with Excellent Mechanical, Electrical, and Wear Properties by Adding the Ti3AlC2 MAX Phase and Granite Via Powder Metallurgy

Ghazi Alsoruji et al.

Summary: The main objective of this research is to improve the mechanical and wear characteristics of a silicon bronze alloy without affecting its electrical properties. Through the addition of Ti3AlC2 MAX phase and granite powders, hybrid nanocomposites were prepared using the powder metallurgy technique. The experimental results showed that the addition of hybrid ceramics effectively reduced particle sizes and significantly improved the mechanical properties of the nanocomposites without sacrificing their electrical properties.

An Investigation of the Mechanical, Thermal and Electrical Properties of an AA7075 Alloy Reinforced with Hybrid Ceramic Nanoparticles Using Friction Stir Processing

Ahmed B. Khoshaim et al.

Summary: This study fabricated hybrid nanocomposite matrices using aluminum AA7075, graphene nanoplates (GNP), boron nitride (BN), and vanadium carbide (VC). BN and VC acted as secondary reinforcement particles, while graphene (GNP) played a key role in the hybridization process. Friction stir processing (FSP) was utilized for manufacturing the composite matrix, which improved the microstructure's grain refinement and reinforcement, limiting grain growth during dynamic recrystallization. The addition of BN and VC decreased the grain sizes of the nanocomposites significantly. The mechanical characteristics of the hybrid composites were also enhanced due to the uniform dispersion of the reinforcement particles and the homogeneity of the hybridization process.

Influence of Graphene Content on Sinterability and Physico-Mechanical Characteristics of Al/Graphene Composites Prepared via Powder Metallurgy

Safae Ramadan et al.

Summary: The main goal of this study was to improve the microstructure and physicomechanical properties of aluminum matrix composites by adding graphene lubricant. The results showed that graphene particles were uniformly distributed in the aluminum matrix after milling, and the milled powders had a particle size of about 31.6 nm. Both sintering temperature and graphene content played significant roles in determining the mechanical properties of the sintered composites. The highest obtained microhardness and compressive strengths were achieved in the composite containing 0.8 wt.% of graphene (AG0.8).

Tribological and mechanical characteristics of AA5083 alloy reinforced by hybridising heavy ceramic particles Ta2C & VC with light GNP and Al2O3 nanoparticles

Essam B. Moustafa et al.

Summary: This study investigated the development of surface nanocomposites using friction stir processing (FSP) to reinforce AA5083 sheets with four different hybrid nanoparticles. The results showed improved mechanical properties and tribological behavior, including enhanced surface hardness, reduced wear resistance, and decreased coefficient of friction. The addition of hybrid nanoparticles resulted in additional grain refinement and the formation of intermetallic phases, leading to significant improvements in the overall performance of the manufactured nanocomposites.

Influence of Friction Stir Process on the Physical, Microstructural, Corrosive, and Electrical Properties of an Al-Mg Alloy Modified with Ti-B Additives

Essam B. Moustafa et al.

Summary: Two successive methods were used to improve the grain structure and properties of Al 5052 aluminum alloy: the addition of titanium and boron during casting, and single- and double-pass friction stir processing (FSP). The Ti-B modifiers significantly improved the mechanical and physical properties, with only a 3% increase in microhardness. Grain refinement had significant effects on thermal expansion and corrosion rate.

Improvement of the microstructure and mechanical properties by hybridizing the surface of AA7075 by hexagonal boron nitride with carbide particles using the FSP process

Essam B. Moustafa et al.

Summary: In this study, hybrid metal-matrix-surface composites (HMMSC) were fabricated using the friction stir process (FSP), with hexagonal boron nitride (HBN) as the main reinforcement for improving the tribological behavior of AA7075 aluminum alloy. Additional secondary reinforced particles, including silicon carbide (SiC), tantalum carbide (TaC), and niobium carbide (NbC) nanoparticles, were used to enhance resistance to deformation, chemical stability, and grain growth control. The hybridization process resulted in uniform distribution of the reinforcing particles and significant grain refinement. The hybrid composites exhibited improved mechanical properties and wear resistance compared to the base alloy.
