Keratoconus: Diagnosis and Staging

Michael W. Belin et al.

Summary: The development of tomographic imaging has allowed for the recognition of early or subclinical ectatic disease, making it useful for screening refractive surgery patients. The screening tools utilized by tomographic imaging devices aid in diagnosing corneal disease, and the Belin ABCD staging and classification system can be used for earlier intervention and prevention of visual loss in keratoconus.

Correlation of the Corvis Biomechanical Factor with tomographic parameters in keratoconus

Elias Flockerzi et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between corneal biomechanics and the severity of keratoconus (KC). The results show that there is a high correlation between the linear term of the Corvis Biomechanical Index (CBI beta) and tomographic parameters (anterior radius of curvature, posterior radius of curvature, and thinnest corneal thickness) in the KC population. This finding suggests that biomechanical characteristics can be used for classifying KC in the future.

Effect of prostaglandin analogues on the biomechanical corneal properties in patients with open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension measured with dynamic scheimpflug analyzer

Marta Isabel Martinez-Sanchez et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of topical prostaglandin treatment on the corneal biomechanical properties in treatment-naive patients with primary open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. The results showed that the stress-strain index provided by Corvis ST significantly decreased after topical prostaglandin therapy, suggesting that the ocular hypotensive effect of prostaglandin treatment may be overestimated when measured using the Goldman Applanation Tonometry.

The relationship between axial length/corneal radius of curvature ratio and stress-strain index in myopic eyeballs: Using Corvis ST tonometry

Zhe Chu et al.

Summary: This study found a significant negative correlation between axial length/corneal radius of curvature ratio and stress-strain index (SSI). This correlation was observed in both patients without high myopia and patients with high myopia. However, SSI did not decrease with worsening myopia, but rather remained stable at a low level. These findings suggest the potential of analyzing dynamic changes in ocular wall stiffness during myopia development using in vivo corneal biomechanical parameters.

Corneal Stiffness and Modulus of Normal-Tension Glaucoma in Chinese

Yunzhi Xu et al.

Summary: This study assessed and compared corneal biomechanics in normal-tension glaucoma (NTG), high-tension glaucoma (HTG), and normal controls. The results showed that the corneas of NTG patients were softer than those of HTG patients and controls, which was associated with thinner corneal thickness.

Correlation of the Corvis Biomechanical Factor with tomographic parameters in keratoconus

Paula Jaye Doyle et al.

Summary: This study found a strong correlation between the linear term of the Corvis Biomechanical Index and KC severity based on corneal tomography, proposing a new scale CBiF based on biomechanical characteristics in KC for potential use in biomechanical KC classification in the future.

Stress-Strain Index Map: A New Way to Represent Corneal Material Stiffness

Haixia Zhang et al.

Summary: The study introduced a new method to map the mechanical stiffness of healthy and keratoconic corneas based on collagen fibril distribution trends. The results showed significant reductions in SSI values inside the cone in keratoconic corneas, with the reductions dependent on the extent of the disease.

Keratoconus patients exhibit a distinct ocular surface immune cell and inflammatory profile

Sharon D'Souza et al.

Summary: The study found significant changes in immune cell subsets and inflammatory factor profile on the ocular surface of keratoconus (KC) patients, indicating a distinct immuno-inflammatory component in KC pathogenesis. These alterations may be related to disease severity, allergy, eye rubbing, providing an additional therapeutic target for KC management.

Corneal Stiffness Parameters Are Predictive of Structural and Functional Progression in Glaucoma Suspect Eyes

Ayub Qassim et al.

Summary: This study found that in glaucoma suspect eyes, corneal stiffness parameters and corneal thickness have a synergistic effect on the risk of disease progression, with eyes that have stiffer and thinner corneas being more likely to experience thinning of the retinal nerve fiber layer, ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer, and visual field damage.
