Enhanced Double-Diffusive Salt Flux from the High-Salinity Core of Arabian Sea Origin Waters to the Bay of Bengal

Jenson George et al.

Summary: During the summer monsoon, high-salinity water from the Arabian Sea flows into the Bay of Bengal, forming a warm and salty layer of Arabian Sea water overlying the relatively cold and fresh Bay of Bengal water. The lower part of the high-salinity core exhibits double-diffusive salt fingering instability.

Intermittent Intense Thermocline Shear Associated With Wind-Forced Near-Inertial Internal Waves in a Summer Stratified Temperate Shelf Sea

Wei Yang et al.

Summary: In the southern Yellow Sea, wind-forced near-inertial internal waves (NIWs) contribute significantly to the baroclinic kinetic energy and thermocline shear in the stratified temperate shelf sea, especially during the warm season. Additionally, intermittent enhanced near-inertial shear in the thermocline is observed, which is driven by the wind-shear-alignment mechanism.

The potential role of thermohaline-shear instability in turbulence production in the Bering Sea and the subarctic North Pacific

Mamoru Tanaka et al.

Summary: Research suggests that diffusive convection plays a potential role in turbulence production in the oceans, and the proposed thermohaline-shear instability mechanism also contributes to this. However, the existence of such instability in real oceans has not been confirmed. Analyzing measurement data, it was found that active diffusive convection is present in the subarctic North Pacific and affects turbulence production.

Near-inertial oscillations in seasonal highly stratified shallow water

Dehai Song et al.

Summary: The Yellow Sea is highly stratified due to the presence of the bottom cold water, with near-inertial oscillation potentially being excited by synoptic weather systems from March to October. The magnitude of the NIOs depends on both wind energy and water stratification, with extreme wind events like tropical cyclones hindering their development.

Estimating Dissipation Rates Associated With Double Diffusion

L. Middleton et al.

Summary: This study presents a new method for estimating kinetic energy dissipation rates forced by double-diffusive convection using temperature and salinity data. The method estimates the up-gradient diapycnal buoyancy flux associated with double diffusion. Experimental results show that the method maintains predictive skill in estimating dissipation rates.
