Variability and Feedbacks in the Atlantic Freshwater Budget of CMIP5 Models With Reference to Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation Stability

Keith Haines et al.

Summary: By investigating the feedbacks between South Atlantic freshwater transports, freshwater content, and AMOC transport contributions across different latitudes and timescales, it is found that salinity variations have a greater impact on South Atlantic freshwater transports compared to AMOC variations, especially on longer timescales. The horizontal transports by the South Atlantic gyre dominate the overturning transports in all models and timescales. Therefore, it is unlikely that South Atlantic freshwater transports by the AMOC can be a useful metric for determining AMOC stability.

The evolution of the North Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation since 1980

Laura C. Jackson et al.

Summary: The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) has a key role in the climate system, and its variability since 1980 has been analyzed. The AMOC has shown periods of both strengthening and weakening, with uncertain magnitudes of change. Different patterns of variability have been observed in the subpolar and subtropical regions of the North Atlantic. Research priorities include improving the monitoring of the AMOC, better representing processes in the North Atlantic, and distinguishing between anthropogenic weakening and internal variability.
