Wind Profile in the Wave Boundary Layer and Its Application in a Coupled Atmosphere-Wave Model

Lichuan Wu et al.

Summary: This study proposed a new turbulence closure model to estimate the impacts of wind waves on the atmospheric boundary layer. The results from single-column simulations and a month-long simulation showed that the swell-induced upward momentum flux increased the surface wind, the misalignment of momentum flux had a more significant impact on the wind profile than the downward momentum flux, and the impact of swell-induced upward momentum flux decreased with atmospheric convection.

The Redistribution of Air-Sea Momentum and Turbulent Kinetic Energy Fluxes by Ocean Surface Gravity Waves

Lichuan Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the redistribution of global wind stress and turbulent kinetic energy flux by surface waves based on a 30-year wave hindcast. The role of waves in the windy oceans in middle and high latitudes is more significant. The findings suggest that including a wave model in coupled climate and Earth system models would improve predictability in weather forecasting and climate modeling.

Evaluation of CMIP6 models toward dynamical downscaling over 14 CORDEX domains

Meng-Zhuo Zhang et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the performance and interdependency of 37 CMIP6 models in terms of large-scale driving fields across 14 CORDEX domains. The results show that model performance varies with seasons, domains, and evaluated variables, and the multi-model ensemble mean performs better than individual models. The study also finds dependence between most CMIP6 models and that models sharing the same idea or concept tend to show less independence. By hierarchically clustering the top 15 models based on multivariate error field similarity, relatively independent models are identified. This evaluation can guide the selection of CMIP6 models based on performance and relative independence, improving the reliability of dynamical downscaling simulations.

The Effects of Ocean Surface Waves on Tropical Cyclone Intensity: Numerical Simulations Using a Regional Atmosphere-Ocean-Wave Coupled Model

Biao Zhao et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the fully coupled simulation, which considers five ocean surface wave related physical processes, significantly reduces TC intensity bias. Surface waves act as a positive feedback on TC intensification in the simulation, leading to a stronger TC with better agreement on structure and size compared to observations.

Observed Drag Coefficient Asymmetry in a Tropical Cyclone

Sheng Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the behavior of drag coefficient (CD ${C}_{\mathrm{D}}$) in two different motion-relative quadrants of Typhoon Mujigae (2015) through flux observations. The observations reveal that the variation of CD ${C}_{\mathrm{D}}$ is closely related to the location relative to the tropical cyclone (TC) center. The CD ${C}_{\mathrm{D}}$ presents an enhancement when the typhoon is away from the observational site and the distribution of CD ${C}_{\mathrm{D}}$ is asymmetric. CD ${C}_{\mathrm{D}}$ tends to level off and even attenuate with the increase of wind speed.

Simultaneous Observations of Turbulent Reynolds Stress in the Ocean Surface Boundary Layer and Wind Stress over the Sea Surface

Chuan Jiang Huang et al.

Summary: This study used high-frequency acoustic instruments to measure sea surface winds and ocean currents simultaneously. The results showed that turbulent Reynolds stress in the ocean surface boundary layer is greatly affected by surface gravity waves, and in some cases may be larger than wind stress, which differs from traditional views.

A Wind-Wave-Dependent Sea Spray Volume Flux Model Based on Field Experiments

Xingkun Xu et al.

Summary: Sea spray plays a significant role in heat and momentum exchanges between the air and sea, but is often not included in operational atmospheric and oceanic models due to uncertainties in parameterization. This is mainly due to a lack of in-situ observations of sea spray, hindering rigorous validation of existing models.

Effects of Wave-Induced Sea Ice Break-Up and Mixing in a High-Resolution Coupled Ice-Ocean Model

Junde Li et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that wave-induced sea ice break-up increases sea ice concentration and thickness in some Arctic seas during the ice growth season but accelerates sea ice melt in other seas during summer. In addition, wave-induced mixing can slow the sea ice formation in winter and the melt in summer by exchanging heat fluxes. The findings highlight the positive impact of wave-induced sea ice break-up on improving sea ice simulations and suggest important implications for future model development.
