Frictional Properties of the Longmenshan Fault Belt Gouges From WFSD-3 and Implications for Earthquake Rupture Propagation

Li-Wei Kuo et al.

Summary: The 2008 Wenchuan earthquake caused surface ruptures along the Longmenshan fault belt, with the Yingxiu-Beichuan fault and the Guanxian-Anxian faults being the most affected. Frictional experiments were conducted on the gouge materials from the Guanxian-Anxian faults, revealing that wet gouges have lower friction coefficients compared to those under room humidity conditions. Additionally, the gouges exhibited enhanced velocity-strengthening behavior at intermediate velocities, indicating a potential barrier to slip acceleration during fault propagation.

Modelling production-induced dynamic rupture of intra-graben faults and related earthquakes in the North German Basin

T. Hergert et al.

Summary: Production-induced seismicity occurs in gas fields in the North German Basin, with increasing effective stress engendered by pore pressure decline and reservoir compaction being the main cause of fault reactivation. Hydromechanically coupled finite element models were used to investigate the emergence of a critical stress state on a fault during pore pressure decline, with subsequent dynamic rupture modeled assuming a velocity weakening friction law. The results showed that the relative position of production wells to the fault and the frictional properties of the fault had significant impacts on fault reactivation and earthquake size.

Fluid pressurisation and earthquake propagation in the Hikurangi subduction zone

S. Aretusini et al.

Summary: Research indicates that in subduction zones, seismic slip at shallow crustal depths may trigger tsunamis due to the low coseismic shear strength of fluid-saturated and non-lithified clay-rich fault rocks. Experiments show that shear-induced dilatancy and pressurization of fluids occur when these materials are sheared at seismic velocities, reducing the energy required for earthquake rupture propagation. These findings suggest that fluid-saturated clay-rich sediments in subduction zones can promote earthquake rupture propagation and slip due to their low permeability and tendency to pressurize when sheared at seismic slip velocities.

Frictional strength and fluidization of water-saturated kaolinite gouges at seismic slip velocities

Li-Wei Kuo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the frictional behavior and deformation processes of water-saturated kaolinite gouges under seismic rates and varying normal stresses. The results show significant weakening of the gouges due to thermal pressurization, leading to fluidization. The use of a purpose-built sample holder offers new insights and understanding of earthquake physics and frictional processes.

Fault Friction During Simulated Seismic Slip Pulses

Christopher Harbord et al.

Summary: Theoretical studies predict non-constant slip velocity during earthquake rupture, but it is unclear which source time functions are compatible with high velocity rheology of earthquake faults. Friction experiments show dependence on applied slip history, with strength evolution controlled by temperature evolution and predicted by viscous creep rheology. Faults may need to accelerate and decelerate more rapidly than current models to promote more damaging high frequency wave radiation.
