A High-Resolution Whole-Atmosphere Model With Resolved Gravity Waves and Specified Large-Scale Dynamics in the Troposphere and Stratosphere

Erich Becker et al.

Summary: This study presents a new version of the HIgh Altitude Mechanistic general Circulation Model (HIAMCM) with specified dynamics. The model is able to simulate gravity waves (GWs) down to horizontal wavelengths of about 200 km from the troposphere to the thermosphere. The study also proposes a method to identify mesoscale GW sources in the stratosphere based on GW amplification due to kinetic energy transfer from the large-scale flow, as well as GW potential energy flux convergence.

Lidar Observations of Instability and Estimates of Vertical Eddy Diffusivity Induced by Gravity Wave Breaking in the Arctic Mesosphere

Jintai Li et al.

Summary: The study reveals the presence of overturning in the mesospheric sodium layer and the coinciding convective instability layer. Turbulent diffusive transport and energy dissipation by gravity waves are identified as important factors contributing to the vertical spreading observed. The energy dissipated by gravity waves is found to generate turbulence, with higher levels of turbulent mixing consistently found in regions of lower stability.

Numerical Simulation of Mountain Waves over the Southern Andes. Part II: Momentum Fluxes and Wave-Mean-Flow Interactions

David C. Fritts et al.

Summary: The study employed a compressible model to describe the evolution of mountain waves and secondary gravity waves, as well as acoustic waves arising from these dynamics. It found that mountain wave and secondary gravity wave momentum fluxes and responses are strongly influenced by large-scale winds and localized mountain responses. The interactions between mountain waves and secondary gravity waves with large-scale winds reveal systematic implications for both mean and tidal forcing and feedbacks.

Summary: Atmospheric gravity waves play a crucial role in atmospheric dynamics, especially those generated by wind flow over small mountainous islands. High-resolution local-area models can simulate realistic gravity waves, but there are still some limitations that require further research and validation.
