Immunohistochemical Expression of Choline Acetyltransferase and Catecholamine-Synthesizing Enzymes in Head-and-Neck and Thoracoabdominal Paragangliomas and Pheochromocytomas

Noriko Kimura et al.

Summary: Paragangliomas (PGLs) can be classified into two types: head-and-neck PGLs which are parasympathetic tumors producing acetylcholine, and thoracoabdominal PGLs which are sympathetic tumors producing catecholamines. Immunohistochemistry of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) is useful for pathological diagnosis of HNPGLs. Further investigation is needed to determine if acetylcholine levels in the blood or urine could be a tumor marker for HNPGLs.

Imaging of Pheochromocytoma and Paraganglioma

Jorge A. Carrasquillo et al.

Summary: Imaging plays a critical role in the management of pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas, guiding treatment based on clinical and genotypic presentations. Functional imaging is highly valued for its sensitivity and specificity, with various radiopharmaceuticals developed to target specific receptors and metabolic processes. The choice of imaging approach is crucial, considering the differences in clinical and genotypic presentations.

Colorectal paragangliomas with immunohistochemical deficiency of succinate dehydrogenase subunit B

Noriko Kimura et al.

Summary: Recent progress in paraganglioma research has revealed a relationship between genotype and phenotype, particularly in relation to SDHB gene mutations and their impact on tumor origin and metastasis. Colorectal paragangliomas are rare, and immunohistochemical analysis can help identify tumor markers and prognosis factors. Prognosis in colorectal paraganglioma patients is largely dependent on tumor size and histologic grade when SDH-deficiency is present.
